Colorado never used anything but gravel and maybe a little salt all the time I was growing up here, (great uncle drove a state plow for decades) but sometime in the last decade or two, they must have gotten a deal on Mag Chloride from somewhere, and that stuff is sticky nasty evilness on vehicles.

Every description I've read says they're a product of volcanic activity and are low in potassium and sodium. I do know it washes off and cars I've seen in Flagstaff aren't rotting out from under their owners.

For years all the state used was cinders but now they use the nasty salt, the road turns white when it dries. Navajo County still just uses cinders on their roads. I am not sure what the salt mix is, I always assumed it was the by product of Potash but maybe not.
