Snowplowing

Question;, my brother plows snow in Erie Pennsylvania as a subcontractor with a 95 F250. Word has it in the plowing community that you don't want to plow with a diesel due to excessive front end weight. What's the real deal with regards to cummins and /or powerstroke.

Diesels are great for plowing I've used Fords, Chevys, GMC and will soon use the Cummins. The extra weight can be an advantage when pushing the heavy wet eastern snow. The biggest drawback is you loose airflow to the intercooler but as long as your not drag racing with the plow on it is no big deal.



Strongly advise a "Snow Foil" or rubber flap at the top of the plow, this prevents excess snow from coming over the plow and blocking the air to the intercooler/radiator.

The diesel is the best for plowing. I went from gas to diesel in 98 and the fuel savings plowing is huge and the power is also a plus since most of the time it's slow going.

I also second the snow foil as the snow coming over the top of the plow sucks. I also recomend Fisher plows, well built and heavy duty.

Great plow trucks, the weight of the Cummins makes for very good traction.

After the first year of plowing I put on a snow foil, wouldn't be with out it now.

Also, I have never had a problem the Fisher plow.

I would throw some weight in the bed all the way in the back, just to offset the front weight a little.

Dad plows with his mildly BOMBed 12-valve and he loves it..... he's plowed with Chevy diesels - both the 6. 2/6. 5T, big-block Chevy - and says that the Cummins is like a bulldozer. Most storms under a foot he has not even really had to touch the soot pedal... . the DTT 89% is so sweet that idling will push a lot of snow.



We run about 800# in the bed... . it's good for traction and inertia.

I had a Phord F250 truck that was set up as a plower. The only thing to do is if it's never had a plow on the front before is to check that your camber pucks on the front wheels are proper for the added weight.

My old w-350 1-ton has a 9' meyers, and it never even sniffles at shoving snow around, and that is just the old 160hp B Diesel is the only way to go, when other trucks are stalling or riding the clutch, you are just putting around like everything is just fine

You fellows had any problem with the 2nd gen frame or mounts, I was told the snow prep pack had extra pieces for the frame. I have a Arctic 9' and that pig is heavy and I am a little worried.

The only thing about the plow weight would be if your truck was one of the ones that needed the front coil spring mount welded. I remember reading it here but forgot which years if afected.

I got the recall notice on my early '94... . so it probably starts from early '94 to 'XX year trucks.....
