Does anyone have any recommendations for an automatic trans repair facility(s) in the LA (Santa Clarita, SFV) area. A Friend needs someone familiar with our Dodge / Cummins combination, his is a 24V 98. 5.

Thanks

Bellflower Trans in Bellflower is a GREAT Trans shop, but a little further than the Valley. But it is worth the drive. Larry and Bob are experts on the Dodge/Cummins and are ATS Installers. They thoroughly understand the 47RE which is what your friend has. I talked to them a few weeks ago, about something else, and happened to ask them how many Dodge/Cummins Transmission they rebuilt every month--they consistently do 6-8 every month--All ATS rebuilds. But your friend might not need a full rebuild--if so they won't do a hardsell. They are good guys.

Bellflower Trans is at 9940 Artesia Blvd.

Thanks Robert, I'll pass the info along to him. Your right he may not need a rebuild, we just wanted a reference to a good shop. Hopefully it's not rebuild time yet... .....

I to would go to Bellflower Transmission... . they did mine and I could not be happier, great service, great workmanship... .

I am in the San Diego area & think I might need a rebuild, anyone know of someone a bit further south than LA?

how do I determine what transmission I have in my truck? its a 2x4, Quad Cab.

thanks

Bob

If you have a '99 it is a 47RE. RE means it is electronically controlled, Vs earlier models, called the 47RH which were hydraulic controlled models.

If you call ATS and ask them, they will tell you where there is a good Trans shop in S. D. If you want to call them, their number is 800-949-6002. But if it were me, I'd drive to Bellflower! These guys are GOOD!

thanks amigo. I want to say that the guy that just did the service said that it was a 45 (he thought it should have been a 47).

is there a way to visually check to see what transmission it has in it? how about part numbers or casting numbers on the trans?

thanks again

bob

Right on Stefan, thanks. I dont think that its any closer, but it might work just the same.

can you tell me how to identify which trans I have in the truck? the lady that had it before me had "transimission work" done to it & with what the guy told me that just did the service, I wonder if they did not swap the trans for another one.

thanks again

Bob

It would be highly unlikely that anyone would swap the trans with anything but the 47 series, either RH or RE, depending on what year it is. If you have a '99 it is a 47RE. To swap it out would require extensive electronic modifications--much more than would be economic for the usual trans shop to do, and the resulting swap wouldn't last too long because of the Cummins Torque!

It is more likely that the guy doing the service doesn't know what he is talking about. Bobalos, where exactly are you? If you are ever in L. A. area, I'll meet you and take a look at your trans if you want. I can't imagine it is anything but a 47RE. Also, I'll take you for a ride in my ATS truck! You'll like it! PM me.

Bobalos,

If your dealing with a transmission shop, the guy is probably called it by the wrong name because most transmission shops refer to these transmission as a 46RE, because they mostly work on gas vehicles and these transmissions are very similar internally in there design, but the hard parts are slightly different.

At our shop Bill also calls them 618 transmission not 47RE or RH's, that doesn't mean he doesn't know anything about them, so don't worry you got the right trans. :) As per your signature you have a 99 which means you have a 47RE.

The swap wouldn't take extensive work because you couldn't do it without switching motors to a gasser. The two bell housing are completely different. 1 is designed to bolt to a gasser, 1 is designed to bolt to a V10/diesel.

Right on guys, thanks a bunch.

I am in San Diego (ON the boarder), I dont get up to LA very often, sometimes I get up to the Long Beach Auto Swap when Im looking for Hot Rod Parts (the REAL reason I bought the Diesel in the first place). I would love to meet up with you & buy you a coffee or something.

thanks again guys.
