On Saturday my wife and I took a trip up to Valley View, TX to buy a two-year old Appendix Quarter Horse colt. Truck performed well going up, however I've noticed that in the past few weeks my mileage has significantly dwindled. The best I could get towing our 26' horse trailer was 11. 3MPG.
We get up to the farm, get our colt, load him on the trailer, shake hands with the breeder and get on our way. It's 8:15PM and it's dark.
I get out of the driveway, and I'm about 1/4mile down the road when the truck just seems to die, but it's still idling. That cold chill ran right down my spine. I'm pressing the pedal, but nothing is happening. The CEL comes on, and now I'm thinking to myself we're 5 hours away from home, it's dark, damn cold and I have my family and a horse, what am I going to do?
I pressed the accelerator one more time and the truck came back to life. Man, that was the greatest feeling in the world. We got going, and as soon as we were on the highway, I got to 60MPH and put turned on cruise control.
I've found that, as I get older, I get pretty tired driving at night. I can tell you that the entire ride home I was wired for sound. I didn't have the TDR Companion with me, and I didn't have any tools with me. Lesson learned.
The truck hiccuped one more time with the dead pedal, about 20 miles away from home, but we got back at around 1AM. Yesterday, I logged on to the TDR with one objective in mind, fixing this problem.
This website has just paid for itself in triplicate. I've been reading great posts on here for the past couple of years now, but I've never applied any of the knowledge, until yesterday. I remembered that AutoZone will check codes for free, so I headed over there and the guy was super friendly. He hooked up the scanner and up pops P0121, APPS/TPS. Big fear aleviated that is wasn't P0216!
I read the thread titled, "Dead Pedal-APPS/TPS adjustment". Arlan, thank you so much for the detailed post. My APPS read . 326v when I tested it. After the adjustment, I got it to . 518v... . the sticker called for . 519v, but you were right about keeping the APPS in place while tightening.
I'm off to get my Air Dog installed this morning. I'll post a thread on how that went this evening.
