Almost 2 years ago I was having a chronic crank but no fire problem on my 98 club cab. I wanted to post an update but the thread was closed for some reason—> https://www.turbodieselregister.com/threads/cranks-but-no-start-then-starts-immediately.265542/

It kept randomly having an issue where it would crank and crank but not fire. Shutting the key off and trying again it would usually fire immediately, smooth and no more smoke than the usual startup puff.. I finally solved it by replacing the overflow valve. Good call by Boeing Diesel, he suggested that on the original thread. Anyway one inexpensive overflow valve later and we’re happily motoring again!

Vaughn,

Don't own one but curious what the overflow valve is supposed to do vs what you determined yours wasn't doing.

It controls the amount of fuel the VP-44 injection pump returns to the tank. When I replaced my VP-44 they supplied a new overflow valve and required one to install a new lift pump to have warranty of the replacement VP-44.
