Guy replies to my autotrader ad. Says he has a "client" who is willing to pay me "x" amount for my truck. The trick is he wants to send me a cashier's check for like $8,000 plus over what the "client" wants to pay for the truck. I'm then supposed to send the balance minus my amount back to the "client" so he can offset his shipping charges. Yeah right, sure pal... ... I smell a rat. Any of you know how this shenanigan works?

No, but It doesn't sound right to begin with, so I recommend not to touch it.

Maybe he has stolen some cashiers checks, lets you cash it, send him the $amount and has suceeded in washing illegal monies????

I wouldn't do it as you have nothing to gain by doing it.

It's the classic Nigerian used vehicle scam. You send him certified funds, he sends you a bogas check that is worthless, you are out $8000.

the cashiers check will be fake. I you send any money it's his, he will also try to get you to send a personal check back for the cashiers check amount. I can remember the whole scam. If you do a search you find it here on the tdr someone posted it a while back.

some people just suck, they should be beaten.

I'd get all the info you can from him and then give it to the authorities. Maybe they are already looking for him. . Atleast you'll know you've done all you can to prevent some sucker from getting screwed. .

Cashiers Checks

Don't accept a cashiers check ever. They are super easy to fake. Any half-with a good scanner and printer can doctor one up. the safest way is to meet them at THEIR bank and stand there while THEIR bank cuts a certified bank check. Even if you take their cashiers check and have a bank verify it - it can very easily be mistaken for good and in few you'll get a very sad call from your back when the check won't clear. A buddy of mine owns a big pawn shop and they see these fake check scams almost daily.

good luck - take cash

Newer version is phishing scam inside the obvious scam. Works kind of like that cartoon of milk in the fridge that you know for sure is spoiled... , yet you've just gotta take a sniff!! In the process of sniffing around the obvious scam you just maybe might inadvertently give up some personal ID info or open a back door to your system or let them sneak in a keyboard data logger or any other number of phishing strategies. Just clicking on their link could be all it takes. JimB.

Yeah, here's the deal on that scam:

You sell them your vehicle for $15,000 when you only wanted $9,000. You ship the vehicle after depositing their cashier's check and mailing them back the $6,000 in a check of your own.

A month later the cashier's check is found to be faked, and you've lost your vehicle and the $6,000 you sent them
