Another TAG Report

I was at the local Wal-Mart tonight picking up my usual 3 gallons RotellaT and I noticed that the store (which is always behind in getting new stuff) has started stocking a multigrade Castrol oil. It's called RX and it's a 15W-40 just like all the rest and I just wondered if anyone had any experience with it or have read anything on it.

I almost bought some and made the swap because I used to run Castrol GTX in everything I had until the Cummins. I like the Castrol but was leary of the new product.

Thanks for the help.

See if you can get a "Spec" sheet for these products, then do some comparisons with the products in question.

Is this Castrol RX a Synthetic blend or a petrolium oil?

I've been running it in my truck & Mercedes diesel & like it. I've been running Castrol products for years in everything I've owned. I don't have any technical data other than a few hundred thousand miles with never having an oil related failure. I've got a '77 Chevrolet pickup with 215k on the clock, a '78 Dodge pickup with 165k on this engine, the Mercedes with 160k on its engine and they all are clean on the top end of the engine with good oil pressure. I've run the GTX 20-50 in my gas engines & went with the Rx in the diesels based on my past experience. It does have a smell after an oil change for a little while & is an all petroleum product. I also use it(Castrol Products) in all my customers vehicles & since my reputation is everything to me..... well you get the picture.

It's not new. I ran it years ago in mine. I switched to Delo because Delo comes in gallon jugs instead of having to use 11 quarts, got a good price on Delo at Costco, and Delo has a great reputation. I had no problem with the RX's performance. If I had a couple cases, I would use it.

Ran the RX 15-40 in a 83 GMC diesel p/u for about 200K and when I had to replace a piston got a good look at the wear charateristics of the oil. It was quite impressive. The engine had about 250 on it and the cross hatch marks where still visible. The only reason I run the delo now is just like JD mentioned, Bigger Jugs are better, :D Cheers,

Use in motorcycles

I'm thinking of using the Castrol RX as well, because Cummins just increased the price of their Valvoline Premium Blue and it's available at Costco. However, I was wondering if I could use it in my motorcycle and ATV as well. They need an oil that does not have the energy conserving logo on the bottle, ie. motorcycle specific oil. I noticed the RX doesn't have this logo. Any issues with using the RX in MC and ATV gas engines? TIA.

Castrol RX is now rated CI-4

I was at Wal Mart Friday and looked at what kind of oil they stocked, and the Castrol RX 15W-40 1 gallon bottles had a "new" label that said it was now rated CI-4. The quarts they had were still CH-4, so they must have been older.

Good to know

I put 12L of the RX in at the last oil change, but to be honest, I don't know if it was I or H. What can happen if I use the CH-4 just this once?

Jim

Santa will put you on the naughty list. :D Really I'm no expert, but I can't imagine one oil change with CH-4 making a difference. Might be different if it was no name brand non diesel rated 10W30.
