Good Morning all;

last night I had an interesting occurance,, I have been noticing that when I am at a steady throttle in a lower gear than 6th that the truck seem to surge,, almost like I am goosing the throttle a little bit,, this was occuring on my way home,, when I parked the truck and let it sit while the turbo cooled,, it increased the idle speed from 800 to over 1000 rpm,, I goosed the throttle and it settled back down again to 800... My truck is brand new - only has 2200 miles on it,, I did see a lot of lift pump issues but since this truck is so new,, I question wheather this might be a problem,, I checked the engine code this morning - all it indicates is "P ECU" then done. . I don't know if this is a valid error code or a normal response to no codes. . :mad: :confused: does anyone have any ideas on this?????????

Ok I have searched all over the TDR site and don't really come up with anything clear cut on this problem. . I am taking the truck to the stealer tomorrow morning and let them have a shot at it but more than likely I will get a kiss,, a pat on the butt and be sent on my way. . <SIGH> I will keep this message updated as I progress on this issue. . But I still love my diesel...

The P ECU is the powertrain ECU reporting in. If that is all you get, you have no codes set. Actually, it sounds like something such as the Crankshaft Position Sensor is causing the computer to read the rpm incorrectly.

UPDATE on my problem

Yesterday I took my truck to the stealer,, I was almost there when I suddenly had no power and the engine light came on,,, I thought to myself,, "good" at least I woun't have to fight with everyone as to what the problem was,, I was able to limp it in,, It turns out the APPS,(TPS) module was bad so movements to the go pedel never were transmitted to the computer,, at times,, or wrong outputs were transmitted. . hence surging on steady throttle.

So now the truck run good,, no more problems,,,I hope...

I am glad your apps was replaced under warrantee for you as mine took a crap just past 100k and I had too cough up $400. 00 plus for the part. They claim that you have to buy complete metal bracket with all the mechanical cable hookups that the actual sensor is attatched too. Later found out sensor can be obtained seperatly from cummins? any way in case you lose it again you might want to remember this thread. I think their is a bunch of old threads on this problem and if I remember the sensor by itself cost around $80. 00. Good luck and enjoy your truck. Steve 99QC 4WD 2500 Stock 128k and third lift pump..... :p

APP is workign good now

Yes, it didn't cost me a thing as I only have had the truck for a month and have less than 3K miles on it. . I did purchase the 5yr-100K extra diesel wrap around warrenty also since I have zero experence with diesels. . For $80 it might be a good thing to have an extra around incase I get caught out somewhere,, I can't imagine it would be too hard to change it - 2 bolts and 3 screws. I can believe that DC replaces the entire assemply instead of the part - quicker - easier for their parts changers. . assembly line repairs instead of real mechanics. I still have a real hard time believing that the lift pump is so fragle that is fails so often - and that cummins hasn't a more robust replacement. . I wouldn't expect DC to do anything about it. . The dakota I had before this truck had a problem with the disk brakes - the rotors kept warping - even new replacements from DC warped,, I went out and purcahsed some rabestoes rotors and pads - cured the problem...

On the TDR we have been using a replacement/addition to the poor lift pump design. It is a pusher pump made by Carter. I got mine from Napa. It was about $125. 00. Placed it back by the fuel tank by myself and it took 30 minutes. I have been running it for about a year with no lift pump problems... ... .....

Its been a week now - update on the APP replacement

Its been a week now and everything seems to work ok. . It wet and rainy here today which seemed to affect the truck before replacing the APP. . The stealer was actually good - kept me updated and didn't argue on warrenty AND kept the 7:30 AM appt. they made for me. . Maybe I have found a good one. . Also I found that DC left out the rear wheel well liners,, no problem said the stealer - they ordered me a set - waiting for them to come in. .

:) :) :)
