A co-worker with a “virgin” ’01 6-speed quad cab 4X4 with about 75K miles is ready to start down the BOMB path (woe be to him!), so we need some guidance. I know this has probably been covered several times here but it’s a tough subject to search on. So if anyone can provide the links that would be fine.

I can help on the intake and exhaust but since I’m a properly-valved owner, I can’t give informed advice on the chips.

Here are the specs and requirements:

He tows a trailer for family vacations and hunting, about 6 to 8 thousand lbs. We’re in Idaho, so mountain towing is a given. The truck is bone stock with a short bed.

He wants roughly 100 hp increase at least. More is great.

He’s figuring a full 4 inch aluminized exhaust.

He’s planning a cold air intake kit like an aFe setup.

He’ll need gauges to monitor boost, EGT, and probably fuel pressure.

He’s budgeting about $1200.

What’s the recommendations for the best bang for the buck?

He’s been looking at the Edge Juice with Attitude and really likes the ability to set different performance levels. But are there better alternatives? And what seems to be the most popular air intake systems?

He’s not planning on a different turbo at this time. Maybe as a second phase next year. He knows he’ll be needing a new clutch at some point and I’ll steer him towards a SouthBend when the time comes.

Thanks in advance!

-Jay

My only thing with the juice and comp is that they add timing. I dont like the way HO sound/run with extra timing... . especially towing. Thats just me. I like the look and function of analog gauges. You just glance to see the direction of the needle rather than actually taking your eyes off the road to read them.

I have the same year and trans/motor as your buddy, and use mine only for work, towing about 10 to 12K so I am wondering the same thing.

- Can he goto a box and not worry that much about EGT's without a turbo upgrade.
- If you do turbo as well, what turbo, and what about sticks.

If I am hijacking please excuse.

I'd go a little differently,

1-Gauges, all 3, boost - egt - fuel pressure

2-SMARTY

3-geno's mufler removal kit.

4-80HP+ injectors

4-SBC clutch

There are 2 #4's because if you do the injectors you'll need the clutch.

Dead on!!! I have nearley that exact setup except my injectors are only 60hp. Wish they were 80's. I went to this after trying several diffrent boxes and I love it. The edge juice is very nice and you might come out cheaper but your friend needs to drive a truck with this setup to see what I mean.

Ditto on the gauges/Smarty/injectors. Exactly what I had in mine until I added the TST. I would do the AFE intake and wait for a new clutch until the old one goes out.

Godspeed,
Trent

I tow 12-15k lbs daily & if I were to spend $1200 & want it done right for towing..... here you go.

1. Fuel pressure gauge, pyrometer, boost gauge & pillar mount $350.

2. Upgrade lift pump with Holley blue pusher pump $120.

3. Buy a Smarty from TDR member Bob Wagner $650

4. Get a adjustable boost elbow for the turbo $30

5. Later add a set of RV275 injectors for $275

He will have himself a nice pulling rig that will pull trailers & be so much more fun to drive.

Tell your friend "Resistance is Futile" and that he will most likely blow right past that first goal after a period of time. :)

It happened to allot of us with the best of intentions that we started out with in the beginning.

I do like 724's list though. That should keep your friend under the stock turbo and not kill his clutch as long as he does not short shift it or lug it very much.

Best of Luck!

I'll third that suggestion.

A 4" exhaust is ok, I like mine. But it's not necessary at this power level. I would avoid a muffler elimination kit unless he likes loud drone when towing.

Remember, that first $1200 is just a down payment :-laf

My friend/co-worker is thinking seriously about going the Smarty route. And he's been doing some research on it via the web at a few supplier sites. But one question that hasn't been anwsered is power expectations at the various levels.

So the question is, assuming for now he stays with stock injectors and turbo, what kind of horsepower and torque increases can he expect with a Smarty at the various levels that he'd likely use before running into EGT, etc. issues?

And if he does go with, say, the 275 RV injectors and maybe a bigger turbo later on, what can the Smarty uprate him to?

Thanks, all. You've been very helpful.

I believe in the FAQ section for smarty it has added around 60hp to stock rigs. And yes the Smarty will work with any other mods and performance level. Its not the power that makes the smarty a good thing it is how it fuels quicker in the lower powerband that makes it feel like a lot more power. Smarty "enhances" the power from bigger injectors and turbo.
