rear end gearing

Calender flipped to June

guys new to the site here and have been reading alot of threads on the different builds. My swap of the cummins and getrag is into a 85 gmc crew dually. The truck runs a 4. 10 rear gear with a 235-85-16 tire, would like to get the highway rpms down some. What about the sound deadening what all are you guys over here doing to control the noise? I have a layer of dynamat extreme down of the inside of the firewall, have started putting a second one down from the transmission hump toward the passenger door area and cowl. Anything else I can do to stop some of the noise? thanks

The dense rubber stuff from Eastwood's is good stuff, I would say look at the door internals (that is the interior surface of the door skin), and the whole floor.

This site is really good on soundproofing, oriented to stereo's but the noise source is similar as are the techniques to reduce sound in the vehicle. http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/

Don't forget the back of the cab. basicly any large surface vibrates, so hit what you can, before you put the seats in.

On our Chevy conversion we used the same as you Dynamat, I wasn't overly impressed with it we installed it on the firewall under the floor mat and doors. It didnt make that much of a difference, I thought it was a waste of time and money. When our fuel tanks came in (under-bed each side of the truck bed) I took out the old fuel tank and put the Dynamat behind the seat and up the back of the cab to the rear window, WHAT A DIFFRENCE THAT MADE!!!!!

I took out back seat and did the back of the cab... seemed to help some.
These 24 valvers are just loud.

just got back last night from a trip to burnsville,nc for some mud races. I had gotten the rear door pillars and the inside of the back of the cab done with the dynamat to the window seemed to help some. Guess I will start saving to do the roof panel and the floor next.

LMC has the factory deisel insulation for the fire wall , also go check out peterbilt they have some good insulation as well

I used the factory diesel pad on the outside of the firewall to the ac box, didn't get to use that section yet because I turned the ac housing the other direction with s-10 parts. thanks goes out to everybody for the help.

I used a product that is the same thing as dynamat. Purchased it at home depot in the roofing section for a fraction of the price. I used it on the floors, firewall, door panels. I also put some 1" foam inside the doors between the window and the outer door skin which helped a lot.
