Has anybody done measurements on the sound levels from the different diesel engines (Cummins, Powerstroke, Duramax)? I'm looking for actual dBs, both at idle outside the truck, as well as at cruise inside.

Also, is there an independent side-by-side comparison anywhere between the three big trucks (Dodge 3500, Chevy 3500, Ford F-350)?

I know - I have weird questions, don't I :)?

Thanks. Alain.

Zari,

I don't have the TDR magazines around me right now since I am at work, but I believe it was discussed to some level in issue # 38 or 39. It is the issue with the 3G red dually on the cover. One of the TDR staff members if I remember correctly, they did some sound(db) comparisons between the new(isbe) and the older(isb) as well as the ford PS and duramax.

The test I read showed they were all within about 2-3 db of each other, a difference that can't be heard with the human ear.

I idled mine next to a new ford 6. 0 at a dyno event and mine was smoother and didn't have some of the high pitched ticking noises that the ford did. Dealer that drove the ford wasn't very happy with his dyno results. He also wasn't happy when everyone left his 6. 0 and congregated around my CTD.

iirc, a 6 db increase or decrease is double or half the sound level, but i can't remember for sure. i do have a digital ratshat sound pressure meter at my disposal. kinda fun... [wish it were the analog ver. though, but that is discontinued]

I thought a a few dB was a big difference in sound. My ISB is much louder than an ISB-e. How many dB is that? (ISB vs. ISB-e)

EDIT:

Here's a link for comparisons... https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55349

Sound pressure is exponential. 6 Db is not twice as loud as 3 db, Normally it takes about a 7 db change for us to detect any difference in volume.

Audio amplification works the same way, 10 watts produces about half the volume of 100 watts.
