cruising down the freeway at 70 mph, give or take, and out of nowhere a sound like a helicopter came up. it got louder and faster as the motor was revved up. im thinking it could be a bent intake valve because when i popped the hood i could feel air coming out of the filter while it was idling. whenever the sound would come, a puff of air would come from the turbo out the filter. the EGTs were higher than normal at 70 and the boost was a little bit lower. questions are what could the problem most likely be and what can i do to rectify the situation? somewhat cheaply? thanks

Most times when you have an intake valve acting like an exhaust valve, the exhaust valve has stoped working. Either the rocker arm, lifter or push rod has failed, maybe even the cam lobe. When I say it has stoped working, I mean it is staying closed, hence, the exhaust sound is coming from the intake when it opens (the compression is still in the cylinder cuz the exhaust valve has not let it out).

well i tore into it and its a bent pushrod. so the question of the day is where do i get a new one. does anybody sell a set of pushrods for these motors?

My main question is why did it bend?. Did the rocker adjustment become loose, weak valve spring etc.

Replacement from Cummins, Dealer (expensive) or any members here that have buisness ties. I do not think I can list names.

im not sure why it bent that is a good question. i will look into it more later. as for the part i need it asap so if anybody has some or knows where i can get one asap. i need this truck on the road like it was yesterday.

Is it possible the valve stuck open and was hit by the piston? seen this before on aircraft engines and marine diesel engines. just a thought, good luck with it.

the vlave seems to open fine when i was rotating by hand. how would i check the valve and all that for damage as well w/o pulling the head. if the valve did stick open could it possibly be alright now. could it have been momentary?

after i did the head job on my truck and torqued it a couple times and checked the valve adjustment i drove it the 20 odd miles home mostly highway, i checked it over at the house and went to fuel up on leaving the truck stop i got on it the first time good and bent two push rods, i think i paid something like $27 for two new rods from a local internal engine parts warehouse

No way short of getting an adapter for the injector hole and pumping air from a compressor into the cylinder or a compression/leakdown test. All valves would have to be closed for the leakdown/air test and feel for air back to the turbo. Other wise put it back together and see what happens.

well put new rod in adjusted all the valves and started it up runs fine for now we'll see if it bends again. cross your fingers

Just my $. 02 but I've personally seen some folks get over zealous with the valve adjustment procedure and set them a little too tight. Light drag on the feeler and you'll be fine.

First time I adjusted my valves I bent a pushrod. I think they were to tight, I still cringe everytime I do the valves, that bent pushrod sound is awful!

My 05 Dodge 3500, 5.9 is still at the shop. Started out having injectors replaced. On the way to the shop the heater core went out. They replaced all injectors and tubes along with heater core. Picked up. Core busted before I could get home. Back to shop. 2nd core done. Ugh!!!! It was leaking before I could get to the interstate. Back to shop. Requested Molar core. 3rd core and finally right. When I go to pick up my truck they ask me if it was making a whop whop noise in the intake. Uh no!!! I'm thinking someone over revved the weewee out of it. Either a push rod or bent exhaust valve. Any suggestions?
Thanks

I am hearing a booming sound when I stand in front of truck on passenger side. it is coming out of the fender I think. I am hoping it is not a bent pushrod.
