what is the easy way to replace a bent pushrod?.

"Easy" not less expensive, let some one else do it I guess.

IMHO push rods are not "wear" items, if you are lucky enough to have just a bent push rod.

If you plan on doing it.
1. I would buy a FSM first.
https://www.genosgarage.com/category/manuals

2. Sign up for quick serve with your ECN.

3. Take your time and double check you have everything needed to do the job properly.

4. For example to just replace a push rod its section 9 page 182 in my FSM for my 96.

Nothing on my truck has been super hard, but I have not had anything easy, besides the cup holder in my signature, that was pretty easy to install. Lazy was the fact I have not adjusted the lid latch yet.

I went through it today and reset all the valves. its better than it was. set intake at .008 and exhaust at .018. the local diesel shop said to try those settings. I do not hear the booming but I feel it is a sticking valve.

Year and miles?

Did you find they were way out? Have you done these before if so what were they set at before? Lot of commments I read once you get them set they are good for a long time. Mine IMO don't think anyone ever did them for 200k, they were not horrible. Mine was cold when I set them.

I stuck with the factory setting. I would have been tempted to take atleast one apart amd check the push rods. Once you back out the rocker the pedestal comes off and you can get the push rods out.

I don't run any additives, so no opinion on that, might want start fresh, also maybe pull an oil sample to get a base line befoe you do that, thats like $20 +/-. Oil sample is not going to help your valves but will be good to start to check the rest of the engine.

FSM Valve:
Adjust the clearance for the valves shown in (Fig.
142). The valve lash adjustment is 0.254 mm (0.010
inch) for the intake valve. The valve lash adjustment
is 0.508 mm (0.020 inch) for the exhaust valve.
Tighten the bolts to 24 N·m (18 ft. lbs.) torque.

96 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 303000 miles. I looked at push rods for 1, 2, 3, 4,cylinders. no bent rods. 5 and 6 I have to take the wiper motor and linkage out and maybe drill some holes to get the rods and bolts out.

Found 2 threads, the first only reply #6 might offer help, that is a 24v thread so some of that wont apply.

This one GAMES suggest checking the lift of the valves, that might show something going on with the Cam. Would think if it was valve stuck open the lash would be off. Unless the travel is different at speed.

On a few other post that are dead ends somenfolks suggest loooking at the exhaust manifold, could be cracked, thats a common issue on these for some, the stock one shrinks. And even a bad injector was suggested on another thread.

This is my first time doing this. I did a cab swap so I do not know if a plug is there. we will find out soon when i take it apart. i will post back what I find.

OK I got a look at the push rods in 5 and 6 cylinders and they are good and straight. yes there is plugs under the cowl.

so, push rods are good. injectors are new 2 months, lift pump new. fuel filter new. adjusted the valves. cleaned the air filter. looked at the exhaust and dont see any black soot. turbo wheel spins good. fuel pressure is 22 psi at idle. ?????????????...........

I will bump up fuel pressure to 24 at idle tomorrow. she is bucking a little going into overdrive. the other day when i filled up the tank fuel was spilling out the top of the tank. is this a possible air leak?......

Maybe you should be looking for an exhaust leak. Trying to diagnose noises over the web isn't very efficient.
