Any suggestions on what front brake caliper to use on an '01? Is OEM all that is available? Even w/ faithfully cleaning and lubbing the slide pins, at 98K miles, the right caliper is hanging up and needs to be replaced. Probably have to replace the rotor too.

I just bought new pistons and rebuilt both my calipers there is nothing to it. Just a piston that is phenolic (plastic) that egg shapes so the whole caliper doesn't have to be replaced. Might want to get a caliper hone to run in and out to get any minor nicks out of the walls. There is a dust boot piston and o-ring and that is all that is inside the caliper. Bought all the pieces at the dodge dealer for under a $100. 00 I replaced the rotors and pads at the same time allot more braking power now. When taking the pistons out you can just pump the brakes with the pads out and they should come most of the way out. Be sure to watch them so one doesn't come out faster than the other. It should be a two person job. Good luck.

I replaced mine with reman Bendix units. Label said "Made in USA". It made me feel good. No problems with them. I think they were something like $65 ea w/ a high core charge too. They might have come from Parts Plus.

EGR HAS 'EM

UNDER "BRAKES" under links (the buttons up above) I just ordered from EGR. I don't think the OEM brakes are any good. The EGR Calipers are blueprinted, (the egr people claiming the main problem with the (usual) calipers are that the manufacturing process is inacurate and prone to sticking.

Blue printed?

I always wonder what "blue printed" means? Doe that mean they are made to specs? Aren't they all? Nothing is exact, ever!

I think its just slang or hype that doesn't mean a thing.

I'm not knocking EGR, just the vague language. I used some rebuilds from NAPA and I have no trouble. If I do they can be exchanged quickly.

I think it means they check for cracks and warps, kinda like magnaflux'n a engine block:confused:

Yup, some things are exact - The specs for manufacturing the brake calipers are exact. The manufacturing process is where the problem arises. That's why there are quality assurance departments to keep things in spec. Problem is when QA gets in the way of meeting production quotas guess who looses... So, nope, they aren't all "in spec"

Blue printed means checking each part to make sure it is "within spec", not just the first few comming off a production line.

The quality control is (supposed to be) a lot better and the tolerances are all exactly what the specifications (blueprints) call for (supposedly).

Wagner Re-Mans

I got some Wagner Re-Mans that were "loaded" (with new pads) for $50 each at a local Auto Warehouse. I used my buddy's auto restoration account (paid cash) and got a shop discount. Here's the best part "Lifetime" warranty on the calipers. I did the usual filing of the burrs in the slide zone and all was well for 15k or so miles, then the right one started dragging. Called to be sure they had a left and right in stock - took mine off and returned them, said they were both dragging, replaced them with no questions. Free brake pads and calipersOo.

You mean they still make something here.

My front pistons were corroded pretty good for 28,000 miles and my rear boots were gone. I ordered new rebuild kit for them but for 65 ea I don't think I would have bothered. Can the pistons be replaced / purchased seperately? Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions and info, but I've been into NAPA, Advanced Auto, and the local auto parts stores and no one seems to carry the calipers for the newer truck. We're talking '00 and above or when ever DC changed to the twin piston calipers. I'm not ready to drop the coin that EGR wants for their product, as good as it probably is. I will check to see if Dodge has rebuild kits for them. I didn't think to check on that. If anyone has found caliper for the newer truck, would you mind posting the mfr. and part number? Thanks

Tom
