I have been quite successful in the last few years using corn oil as a blend up to 50/50 with #2. My source has now switched over to soy oil. Does anyone have experience with soy oil as a WVO fuel? Have you noticed any difference in its use, or will it work the same? Thank you.

oil

Hello Rebel Ram

Soy / Corn / Sunflower / Safflower / Cottonseed / Peanut, the list goes on

are all fine for use. Blends of these and others are fine also

the partly hydrogenated oil can be used in warmer weather and if you only use the top oil after its settled.

The best is Canola but hard to find out of the 10 places I pick from only one has Canola

you will be fine with the soy

good luck

Thank you both for the feedback. I had at one time 13-55 gallon barrels filled to the top with filtered and ready to go corn oil. But when I got down to 3, I went to check on my source to get more I was informed that now they were taking "offers" on the waste oil. I cannot blame them for trying to recoup some cash. But for me, the free ride is over.

What are some paying for waste oil? I am willing to pay but dont want to pay too much or not offer enough and loose out.

The restaurant I am getting the majority of mine from was being paid 5 cents a gallon for it. When I told her what I wanted to do with it, and that I would set up a tank, filter/funnel, with cover and provide a step stool, she was glad to let me have it. She has since been offered 10 cents a gallon for it but I help them out with small repairs and am a very regular customer there so she has told them she is not interested. I am going to pick up almost 250 gallons this weekend when I go to fix a fluorescent light and the water inlet on her ice machine (which I will not charge labor for).

If you can patronize the pace regularly and maybe help them out, they will probably be glad to keep your relationship. If you are not a regular customer, offer them 5 cents or maybe 10 cents a gallon. That is still CHEAP fuel!

cost

Thats a bummer on starting to cost :mad::{

I would say that its going to cost you about . 10 to . 13 cents per pound for the oil they bought it for 35. 00 to 45. 00 for 35 lbs so they paid 1. 00 to 1. 28 per pound but this is only for the clean oil not the crud in the oil I would think they might go . 05 cents per pound dirty

A full drum 400 pounds would cost 20. 00 at . 05 cents

GOOD LUCK

I have been paying 50 cents per gallon for good clean used oil.

It's getting harder to find good oil when the new price went up by double

and they are using it longer.

per POUND? that seems like an odd way to measure liquid volume? Are you sure it is not by the GALLON, which is the way they purchase it (in 5 gallon containers)?

My suppliers both buy in 5 gallon containers and the oil is strained as it is put in the container, so it is decently clean oil. I filter it and run it in my truck with no problem. I would gladly pay them something for it but I am a regular weekday breakfast customer at one place and weekday lunch customer at the other and they are happy with our relationship. I have now helped both places out with electrical/mechanical repairs also.

I love the way my truck is quieter and smokes less with the blend, so paying a little would not bother me at all! Sure beats sending all my money to the middle east!

I know it sounds wierd but when you buy oil in bulk 275 gallon totes you buy it by the kg.

A tote of oil is a metric ton this is about 2200 lbs or 1000 kg

I looked in to buying a rail car of oil and was quoted 65 cents per pound a little over a year ago and was talking to a biodiesel plant trying to buy some crude vegetable oil the price again was quoted in cents per pound

A 35lb box of oil is not 5 gallons its about 4. 54 gallons but we all call it 5 gallons.

Crude corn oil (Vegetable oil) weighs 7. 7 lbs per gallon.

just think a sign that says diesel fuel . 584 per pound sounds better right?

its 4. 259 per gallon 7. 3 lbs per gallon.

. 50 cents per gallon is . 064935 cents per pound so its close .

just some worthless info on the internet and in my brain

That is interesting... I know the restaurant I get mine from that puts it back in the containers has full 5 gallon containers. The jugs hold 5 gallons anyway. They may not come totally full when new, but I get 5 gallons per jug (I sometimes filter into 5 gallon buckets).

Interesting that a liquid would be sold by the pound... I can see using an international standard like liters, but weight to measure a volume of liquid?

Oh well, I love by wvo blend...

I talked to a guy that is in the business of collecting used oil about six months ago and he said that he gets about $250 for 9 55 gallon drums which is 50 cents per gallon. That is way I elected to pay 50 cents per gallon for the good stuff and get rid of any competition.

My cost for making Biodiesel based on 480 gallons per year:

Oil . 50

Meth . 80

Potassium Hydroxide . 10

Calif waste hauling lic. . 83

Calif road tax . 18

Elect and water . 10

TOTAL $2. 51/gallon

Note: This does not include Fed road tax of . 24/ gal

My most recent cost:

15 gallons of diesel (@$3. 97/gal): $59. 55

15 gallons of waste fryer oil: $0. 00

filters for oil: $4. 00

My cost in Georgia: $61. 55 per tank of fuel :D:D:D

(not including time and beer involved in filtering, pouring, etc. )

I figure it essentially makes diesel cost me $2. 00 a gallon. I can live with that!

Dieselnut,

What micron level do you filter to?

I use a 2 micron filter prior to the lift pump and a 10-5-2 micron filter when making Biodiesel. Have never changed the OEM filter, but have to change the prefilter about every 1500 miles because it is under vacuum and not pressure.

I have no clue... but it works! It is a fiber filter media about twice as thick as a home air conditioning system filter, cut to fit in a poly drum funnel, in which I have a wire screen. I pour the oil into the filter, after letting it settle, which separates the majority of the impurities, it then goes into a clean 5 gallon jug. I pour slowly until I see the water, heavy gunk start heading toward the spout, then combine the "gunk" oil to let it settle out again. It sounds complicated but it only takes a few minutes and a couple beers once a week to do. I have never clogged a fuel filter after the first one (normal when you start using bio blends) and have been doing this over two years.

When I get my 300 gallon tank set up, I will filter the oil further, using a pump and a 20 or so micron hydraulic filter, then let the truck's fuel filter do the rest.

Dieselnut,

We pour our collected oil from 5-gal buckets that usually sit for a couple of days to let the goo settle. We pour into a 240-gal poly tank. Once a week we make a 40-gal batch by pumping off the top of the poly tank. We filter through 15-micron fuel filters many times, then into the truck to let the truck filter take over. I haven't changed my truck filter since early August... ... .
