Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) spare ECM concerns?

Because of various concerns about ECMS and potential future malfunction or failure, what problems might be encountered if an owner managed to obtain a good spare, and at some future point swapped it with the original?



Are there any special programming or installation issues - any problems with interfacing properly with instrument panel instruments or readouts? Is there any reason a reasonably competent owner could NOT do it and expect normal vehicle operation?
 
I don't think there would be any problems. You would want to make sure it has the same ECM code that you are currently running before install. If you pick up a spare from a wrecking yard or such, make sure the part number on it is the same as you currently have, and then it can be programmed with the correct calibration regardless of what is in it at the time of purchase. The biggest problems I have seen with any "used" ecm is water intrusion. The best thing to do is get a spare and bolt it on to verify correct operation, and then vaccum pack it and put it on the shelf.
