I am putting 315's on today, and only bought 4 of them. I understand that a 315 will actually fit in factory spare location. Do I really need one? Would it be horrible to run the 265 along side the big ones for a few miles? Little cars have been running "donuts" forever; same thing right?

I would not want to do that with the limited slip axle, it senses torque differences between the two tires to do it's job. It may not hurt to limp to a tire shop but I wouldn;t run down the expressway with it. Other folks may no more but that has always been my impression!

"Donuts" have the same or "very" similar rolling diameters as the O. E. tire. You will be very close to a 4" difference in RD. Not a good idea to run at all at that difference. I would park it or tow it. IMO... Scott

I fully agree with bpenrod. Never put 2 tires of different diameter on a limited slip axle. If it's absolutely necessary to carry a smaller spare, then if you get a flat on the rear put the spare on the front axle and put one of the front axle tires on the rear.

For the benefit in safety from not having to change 2 tires alongside a major highway it's worth the extra cost for a full-size spare.

The last time I got a flat, I just called for a tow. It's easier than fighting those huge tires with traffic screaming by a few inches from you. When I replaced my first set of 315s, I did have the tire shop mount the least nasty of the old tires on my spare wheel and throw it in the bed, but I don't usually carry it.

i've got 5 of the 315's so i have the spare as well... i FUBAR'd the limited slip rear end in my tahoe when i had her by running a smaller spare than the tire on the other side for like 40km... [i didn't want to, but i didn't have the proper wheel lugs to run a steel wheel - had special alloy wheel type with a long shank on it, so i didn't want a front wheel falling off so in the rear the spare went]

It would take a bit longer but couldn't you take a tire from the front and put it in the rear and then put the spare in the front and be ok? A lot of work though... I would just slap the 315 on the spare.

What is there an echo in here? Just saw rbattelle's post... disregard my reply :D

I only bought 4 315s when I put them on the stock alloy wheels a while back. One reason I did not buy the spare 315 is I did not think the spare rim with the 265/70R/17 was 8" wide. I still not sure as it has never been off. Last week I found a set of 4 Dodge stock 17x8 Chrome wheels with 315s mounted for sale locally. They had less than 10K and looked like new. I bought them and had them put on and they ride great, best $700 I have spent.

Now I have two sets of 4 BFG 315s, one on stock alloys and the other on stock chrome. I am going to use one tire from one set for a spare. Not sure what I am going to do with the other 3. I want a smaller set of tires to use at the drag strip. Are there three people that need a 315 spare out there??

I have measured and it will fit, just is very tight.

Even if it wasn't 8" wide it wouldn't matter. I've seen 18. 5" wide tires on 8" rims and 12. 50 wide tires on 6. 5" wide without any issues although it's not ideal for treadwear.

I doubt that different sized spares would hurt the torque biasing limited slips in these trucks. With clutch type limited slips it will be an issue though, especially trash locks.

I've asked this before but i never got a good answer, what do you guys think about using a BFG 315 (34. 5") as a spare with the LSD and 35" Toyos. Is a 1/2 inch enough to hurt the rear end?

Seems to me that with only a 1/2" difference, you could air down the larger wheel. This would change it's rolling diameter by about a half inch or more.

Can someone confirm this. Will a BFG 315 fit in the spare tire space ????

I use a ratcheting strap to pull it towards the hitch (rear). It goes thru one safety chain hole in hitch, and a hole in wheel. Otherwise it hits the diff. cover.
