Does anyone know of any sources to get a spare key for an 06 jetta? I called the dealer and they wanted over $150 for the spare. I am looking for a cheaper alternative, and my local automotive centers are unable to help me.

I think that I may have an extra remote from our 2005 Passat that we do not need. My understanding is that as long as you have on remote fob, you can use it ti progarm a second one, as long as you are dealing with the same generation VW (your 2006, my old 2005). That being said, you would STILL need to get a key blank cut and attach it to the fob, but that is a much cheaper option then buying through the dealer. PM me if interested.

Go to a reputable locksmith, I know when I used to work in the industry we could do it for about 1/4 - 1/3 the cost at the dealer.

I had an 06 Jetta and had to get a spare key made, then programmed. I would start with 1stvwparts.com which is out of Auburn WA. I believe the internet parts contact I spoke with is Zeb and he was very helpful in getting me set up with the right hardware. It was a while ago, but if I recall, I bought the transponder separately from the actual cut key as there were only certain places that would get you a key cut to your serial number. Once you have the correctly cut key, mount it in the transponder (immobilizer) and have a local dealer synchronize it to your car. You will need to provide all keys during the synchronizing process as it clears the old synchronization then programs all keys together. The dealer portion cost me about $45, the new parts was probably $120 at the most. The biggest hassle was getting the actual key portion ground. I looked everywhere and it seemed the only way to get the right cut was using a VW process which makes you prove you are the owner - used my VIN as well.
