Hey Guys, I was pulling a trailer, hit a small bump entering my long

driveway and saw something in the rear view, a tire sitting

in the driveway apron. Whoa! Somebody lost a tire. Looked closer,

it was MY spare tire. Looked at the winch, it was still cranked

all the way up, the little cradle was ok. So whats up with this? If the thing

had bombed away at highway speed it may not have been good for me

or anyone else. My theory is, it rattled the cradle loose form the spare

tire hub due to a small amount of slack in the winch, maybe an inch, and because I run air springs to tow a dump trailer, it STUDDERED the cradle loose from the tire. Not wanting a repeat, I drilled two little 1/4" holes in the cradle and tyrapped the thing to the wheel hub, won't happen again

to me! You may want to check your setup, my rig is a 94 4x4 with the

stock 245/75/16 spare & steel wheel.

I think you are right about there being a little slack. I've driven on a lot of rough roads (including some in GV) with my '95. No problems with mine which I keep pretty tight.
