I was wondering if anybody out there knows how the spare tire mount thingy assembly mounts undr our trucks. A buddy and I would like to mount them under our travel trailers to hold spare tires.
I'm hoping it's as easy as mounting it against a flat surface or square or C channel steel stock. We'd just get a couple off trucks in a salvage yard.

Thanks,
Scott

On our '06 Grand Cherokee the winch and plate are one assembly. It is held in place by 3 bolts. I would assume ours are the same. IIRC on the Jeep it did not mount to a flat surface, so you will probably need the C channel or something similar. But what you are proposing should be possible.

Our 5th wheel came with the underneath mounted spare. It works like the one on our trucks. Adapting a junk yard truck assembly would probably be less expensive than buying anything with RV on it.

Just another thought................ I am planning on doing a similar thing, but with a bronco spare tire carrier.

Best info I have:

Thanks for the info everybody.
I wanted to stick with a Dodge assembly so I wouldn't have to carry a separate crank handle.
I'll let you all know what we end up with.

Cheers,
Scott

Try this link and see what you can find in your area. http://car-part.com/ After putting in your year, area and what you are looking for it will probably ask you for interchange years. I put in 2000-2007 and it found a lot around here for $50 or less.

Are you going to mount it under the tongue of your trailer? I want to get mine off the back as well, need the room for other things. David

David, I was thinking of putting it under the back of the trailer but now I'm having second thoughts. If I have a flat it could be hard to get to it.
I wonder if the tongue gets too close to the ground pulling into gas stations and such?

I have seen lots of newer trailers with the spare mounted under the tongue. Your trailer should be up high enough being a newer ones. Go to a large RV lot and look around. The ones I have seen mounted near the back are quite a ways in, as in towards the front, so you don't scrape the tire going down a driveway or slope.

You and I seem to have similar taste in trucks :) David
