The cable is broken on my spare tire winch. Is it a suitable repair to simply clamp on some new cable? Does it need to be completely reeled in to hold the tire up? The dang thing is riveted together, so I can't take it apart and run all new cable. Also, where can I find the metal piece that goes on the end of the cable that threads through the center of the wheel to hold it up? Thanks in advance.

Mine died on the 98. 5 and I obtained one from the dealer. It was maybe $65. 00 for the whole unit. I got a Master cable lock after that and secured it to the body. I did the same for my '07.

Of course, a new one from the dealer would be nice, but I'll put that $60 towards the stuff i really need: new radiator, brakes, tires... :{ Has anyone fooled around with this thing or has everyone just replaced it?

I was able to retrieve the parts when mine broke. I attached an eye bolt to the plate that goes through the wheel, brought the end of the cable through the eye, and secured it to itself with 3 cable clamps. It's done OK like that for 4 years now.
