Just a heads up if you have an 01 check your spare tire cable. I was on my way out of town Friday night when my spare tire spontaneously decided it did not want to go any further    it just fell off. I would not have known except for the other drivers on I-25 pulling up to me and letting me know. I thanked them, hid my face and kept on driving. Anybody else have this happen. It looks like the cable broke right where it attaches to the winch.

Ya it is due to not having the tire tight to the frame after that happened I replace the hole thing with one off a ford one ton there is some mod but nothing to hard and now I always chain the tire up.

I haven't checked mine lately, but I wouldn't miss it if it was gone.

Mine is the original Michelin. Long story, but I despise Michelin tires.

I have considered using it as an on-board air storage tank though, for the air horns that I haven't installed yet, the Airlift bags, and for airing up the ATV tires.

Couple years ago before I got married I climbed under the truck to check everything out and my spare tire was gone. Cable was broke so had to buy a new one of those and new spare. Also found out later that the rim is the wrong offset so it rubs on the tie rods up front when on.

A few weeks ago, my brother's 1999 2500 decided to drop the spare tire while towing his fairly new nice 5th wheel. It is still being fixed and caused several thousands $$ in damage. The tire smashed the front of the trailer hitting all of the electrical stuff and doing a number on the acess/storage doors. Tire went under the trailer and put a big hole up through the floor, back down and bent the 2nd axle, and then bent the corner of the frame going out the back for good measures. Seemed to have broke all plumbing/waste pipes and bent the gas line. Just a reminder to check that tire.

Mine had a secondary cable with a pad lock on it until the other day. I had neglected to occassionally oil and open the pad lock and it froze up. And yes the plastic cover was still on the lock. I had to take a grinder to the pad lock to get my spare off. It was a good thing that when I need it I was close to a family members house that I could get to to use his grinder. Lesson learned.

I had my winch assembly replaced under warranty when I noticed it was hanging down. Think its time to use CarlJensen's suggestion as I've got a Baja trip coming up. Thanks Carl!
