I was doing a routine oil change today and when I removed my metal oil filter wrench after tightening the filter it touched the

positive side of the alternator and the AC aluminum hose and caused a spark. Upon close inspection, the plastic cover for the hot wire on the alternator does not completely cover the hot wire.

Anyway, I ended up putting some flex loom over it and taping it over with electical tape.

Minor thing that will scare the crap out of you and cause you to

buy a 140 amp fuse for the alternator.

Thought you would like to know. . BTW, my CTD is a 2000 model.

I had the same thing happen. I read in this forum that there is a TSB out and that DC will fix this problem and no charge by putting a rubber boot on the wire to cover the bolt and nut. I have not been in to have this done since the TSB came out but plan to.

You can also just take a piece of 3/4" heater hose and slit one side of it and wrap around the alternator contact. I did this and it protects the contact just fine. I alos did the same thing with the positive battery terminals on both batteries. I used the red heater hose.

Man an I thought I was the only one that would do that on my first oil change. And yes it scared the poop out of me as well, but I thought the sparks were pretty cool though.

Hey FJ40Charles did you happen to go down to Poteua, OK over Labor Day weekend by any chance?

There was a thread out on this about ayear or so ago, seems a few of the boys burned some fuses, I put some elect. tape around mine, no problems so far. ;)

Got the alternator fuse from the dealer today and it cost around 7. 00. Don't feel like going to the dealer and having to haggle with the TSB and having to wait a day or so to get it done. Electrical tape is just fine...

Doug, I did not make it to Poteau for Labor day. I was just too tired and did not feel like going. I heard none of the guys from

Arkansas showed up. I'm looking forward to next Memorial Day when I should have my reverse cut D60 axles, 39. 5" boggers,

Atlas III case and a coilover 4 link suspension.
