Does anyone out there have a good source for special tools required for work on our engines?



Right now I am in the need for an Engine Barring Gear 1/2" drive P/N 3824591. I probably need to contact Cummins don't I??? Probably just answered my own question!:rolleyes:
 
Cummins Diesel Special Tools

Honkindiesel, I purchased the special tools for my 93 from a local Snap-on vendor. IMHO, expensive, saved a fortune in checking pump timing myself. Rick.
 
Cummins Performance Tools

Last time I was at the local Cummins dealer, picked up a "B" series tool set, it not only has the barring tool, but ratchet, sockets, feeler gauges, wrenches and oil filter wrench. Part number 3399869 and was on sale for $69 cdn. Thats cheaper than what Snap-on wan's for just the barring tool. All tools are KD brand, the engine barring tool is part # KD3824.

Thanks a bunch for that tip. I just discovered we got a Cummins Repair/Service centre out here. Now that I know, I'm calling them Monday for that kit!:D :D :D. I need to do that valve lash adjustment and can't do it without that barring tool. It's sorta the key to tuning up the engine. I know I'm gonna need it lots in my life time.

I really plan on keeping the beast for the rest of this life anyway. So, I might as well get to know her intimately! :cool:



This year I'm giving her the top to bottom overhaul and dress her up with a few guages. Gotta Power-lok differential on order that should be in next week. Next year she gets dulled up with a new metallic paint job and 4 clear coats and new moose catcher designed to my specs. Ooo I can hardly wait!



Ya ya ya! I'm gonna spend a lot of money on her... . but shes' worth it!

Sheesh, I just use the alternator to spin it over, just in reverse rotation. Never thought to get the barring tool. Pretty good priced kit for what they supply... I'll have to look into it.

Since we happen to be on the subject, what special tools have you guys made or purchased to located TDC on the #1 or any of them for that matter? I need to adjust the valves on both of my trucks, and was going to go ahead, but then I started thinking, "Hmmmm, if the timing pin is not accurate, then I just pulled the valve covers to re-adjust to new incorrect specs :confused:"



I've heard the drill out an injector trick, but I don't have any spare sprayers, and really don't feel like upgrading just to make a tool out of an old one... . but we are bombing here :D

I'm w/ ETOBICOKE on the Cummins Tool Set! I have the exact one and it has everything you need for valve adjustment (including laminated directions) & oil changes. They can be found at reduced rates because many of the Local Cummins Shops are stating to phase out some of their 12 Valve inventory. I got mine a few months ago for $29. 00 on a TDR announced special so I ordered one for me & one for my First Gen Drivin' Girlfriend. :D

For a valve set, being within a degree or 5 for that matter isn't critical for clearances. The cam shaft turns at 1/2 the rate of the crankshaft, so a few degress on the crank is very little on the cam. I just take all the covers off, and turn it over till I see #6 at crossover (intake and exhaust just exchanging opening) and do the set, then roll it till #1 does the same. I don't even use the TDC pin. .

True Story Jason!



I used the "Reverse VooDoo" Method as described in TDR Magazine Issue #29 - pages 44-46 with excellent results. This method uses the exact #6 valve 'crossover' method that Jason is referring to.



Couldn't be any easier! :D

Tool kit is a big waste of money. Sure looks good, but the only thing good in it IMO, is the barring tool. Unless you don't have ANY tools, then keep your money, I'm sure there is plenty of other stuff on your truck that could use the money. I bought it from Cummins, and just like the Cummins, it holds its value, I think I sold it for more than I paid for on ebay. IMO the Dodge Cummins man should already have all those tools that are in the kit. The only odd ball is the barring tool.

There are three or four other methods used to turn the engine over while working on it, depending upon what your doing.

Well, I really just need the barring tool, but thought a whole "kit" from Cummins would be cool. I guess I'll just get the barring tool...

The kit is money well spent if the above is still true, which it was the last time I checked. In addition the nice case can go right into the boonie box and maybe my kids won't find and "borrow" it. :(



Since the timing pin thing is hit and miss one should mark the damper pulley with true TDC. I use the valve drop method to find true TDC and put a permanent mark where I can see it. No more problems with the idiot pin or valve settings.
 
The barring tool is a KD tool, which is available from many other places other than SnapOn. Napa, Quad4x4 etc. 1/2" breaker bar and not sure what size socket on a bolt on the vibration dampner works very well at turning the engine over. If one could find this kit cheaper than the $50 or so it runs, say used at $25, then maybe it might be worth it. Could be benificial on the road, so one wouldn't have to pack all those tools. I think the kit includes, common metric wrenches, metric sockets, cheapo 3/8"drive ratchet, cheesy filter wrench, feeler gauge- I can only count the number of times I wished I had my trusty feeler gauge out on the road:rolleyes:, and the big bad barring socket.

I think we should start a thread on something like "Tools needed for the 1st gen owner to be successful with his/her truck". - 'Might want to have these tools in your toolbox, if you have a 1st gen' etc... .
