A little morning math. Can't do this while driving, but,it is accurate. Clock the number of seconds between mile markers. Divide the number of seconds per mile into 3600. The result is your speed. It's very accurate.

To improve accuracy, go a few miles, say 2 or 3 and divide the number of seconds by the number of miles to get seconds per mile.

My 2¢: Forget looking for a speedo gear - you ain't got one. Forget bending or recharting your speedo gauge for the reasons above. You will need a device that artificially add (or subtract for smaller tires) pulses to the vehicle speed sensor lead of your computer, and it will correct your speedo automatically. This is done with the Abbott unit or the Truspeed from Superlift. There are stories of install problems but I think they're due to insufficient connections. As with any car accessory you need a mechanically sound, electrically transparent, moistureproof connection, like an MSD Deutsch connector available through most speed shops. Its alot easier than it may sound, there's only 4 wires!! Install takes about 20 - 30 minutes, the units are adjustable for a WIDE range of tire sizes and subsequently readjustable. I just checked mine with 2 GPS units and a calibrated police radar and we couldn't detect an error - it's within 1/2 mph!!
