The Dana 70 rear axles in our trucks are going to see many miles. As they get higher milage, the rear axle seals start leaking. Many times you will find that the seal has actually worn a groove in the axle seal surface. This is easily fixed with a speedi sleeve. The part number for a 1st gen truck is 99287. The ones I bought are made by Chicago Rawhide (CR). They are available at any auto parts store or bearings supply company.

Make sure to use the green cylindrical loctite for securing them to the axle. For a driver, I used a piece of PVC plastic. It is threaded on one end for a 3" cap and made to slip over a 3" piece of pipe. Cost me $1. 99. Just make sure to go slow and straight. Also, put electrical tape around them when you trim off the excess length. I used a dremel tool. Wrap the sleeves about 4 times with electrical tape to prevent damaging the speedi sleeve when triming it. When you install the seal in the hub, make sure to coat the OD of the seal (where it contacts the hub) with some type of silicone sealer. Before you put the hub on the truck, put vasoline the seal and the new seal surfcae. Put it back together slow and straight. That should cure the leaks for the next million miles or so.
