I have neighbor who has a 99 2500 4x4 auto. He said the abs and the brake light (light which says emergency brake is engaged) came on and then about a week later the speedo quit working. I haven't looked at it, but my guess is something blew apart where the tone wheel is. . not really sure though. I have no idea how this would affect his speedometer. Anybody have any clues????? I don't even remember if these trucks have electonic speedos or cable driven.

His rear diff speed sensor went bad mine did the same thing last month while I was on vacation in upstate New York. It takes @ 10 min's to change I think it cost @ $40. 00.

Is the sensor in the diff or near one of the wheels? His truck isn't there right now so i have nothing to look at...

It's located right on top of the differential, a bit forward of center. Can't miss it. It;s the only one there! Only one electrical connection on it.

You have to take off a retaining nut which holds the wire connector in place, then remove the bolt for the sensor and slowly pry the sensor from the differential.

As previously stated, very easy to replace. Just changed mine last month.
