Steering box problem

Silly Question

On my 93 the speedo started slowing down the other day and finally would not go above 20 or so. I got underneath and looked at the mechanism with speed sensor on it and the large nut was loose that holds the gear housing to the speed sensor. So I tightened it thinking that must be all that was wrong and now no speedo at all. Is their a way to test the speed sensor?

I had a similar problem with my '92 with a 5-speed. My parts terminology is probably wrong, but after unscrewing the sending unit that is attached to the side of the transmission and examining it, I saw that it was corroded and frozen and the shaft inside it would not turn.

There are other postings responding to similar questions about speedometer failures which gave other possible causes, and it may be worth looking into them for other answers.

By the way, my fix was a little over $100 and I got my son to install it in about 15 minutes. Good luck.

I would remove the whole unit and clean everything up and ensure that everything is freed up and moves easily. Also inspect the the little shafts to make sure that they are not rounded off. After cleaning the electrical connections apply a good electrical contact grease before reassembly.

Click under my name and it will take you to my picture album which shows some pictures of the speed sensor.

Also check that the large nut at the end of the transmission where the drive shaft connects hasn't backed off. If it is loose the speedo will act slow or erractic.
