Hi all, As many of you know. I have been repairing the 90 threw 93 electronic speedometers for some time now. Normally the problem is broken gears in the odometer. So clean it up replace the gears and your good to go. Well lately I have been getting speedo's where the problem is the speedometer quit

and the odometer is working fine... In the past I would just pull one out of the pile of cores and fix it.

Now I am out of good cores. So I sat down and figured out the electronics. It turns out that when the IC chip malfunctions the speedometer quits. There are also 2 electrolytic capacitors on the circuit board that fail as well. Electrolytic capacitors are kind of like flashlight batteries. When all the juice inside evaporates or leaks out the cap quits working. The good news is that I have located some of the IC chips and electrolytic capacitors to repair them with.

Another problem I have found is that the speedo and the odometer are too often not in sync .

If you want to check yours run the truck up to 60 mph . The odometer should turn 1 mile in 60 seconds .

If not I have found the best way to correct it is to replace one of the resistors with one half its value then install a potentiometer (like a volume switch) beside it to make up the difference . The potentiometer adjusts the resistance value . This in turn allows you to adjust the speedo to be exactly in sync with the odometer ...

Is it worth sending in a known good unit to have it checked out? I have the on in my 93 that isnt being used right now... Just curious if there is anything you can do to a good one to make it better?

It can't hurt to have it checked out. Keep in mind that I only have parts for the VDO units. There are a vary few Mitsubishi units out. They are mostly found in late 93 production trucks. They are totally different internally to the VDO.

I have my cluster out currently... how can I tell the difference? Is it obviously marked VDO? Mine is a 93.

Heres one for you my speedo and odometer both stoped, I know its not the VSS because my cruise control still works fine. any ideas?

Hey Mysteryman is it only the electronic speedo's that you can use for part's I may have a couple of the older style if you want them just over shipping ?

I am assuming that you have traced the circuits and that there are not any problems ???? did they both quit at the same time ? check your computer to body ground circuits

Both of them did stop at the same time but I did not have time to check any thing out, but this morning i hoped in and took off and its working again

I might add one thing i found on one of mine the the in put rod was striped on one of mine the peice were the wires plug in , i guess called the vss or the generator
