Speedometer woes

What year did Dodge change from the old cable drive from the trans/transfer case to the electrically sensed speedo? The 93 that I just picked up has problems-- the speedo seems to go on its own, following engine speed. Even when the truck is sitting still. I want to put in an earlier unit (change whole dash?). Thanks.

Some of the guys have reported problems with the plug next to the sender on the rear of the transmission. Sounds like water was the problem. You may want to take apart and clean real good and then see how it does. I have not had any trouble with mine. (now watch what happens having said that)

I had the same problem with mine to. I replaced the speed sensor on mine it works great. it only cost $ 20-40 {I forget} but it is located on the transfer case and it unscrews off. Do you have cruise? My cruise would'net work either and it also fixed it to. Hope this will help******Justin

Vehicle Speed Sensor

I just replaced one of these last weekend. NAPA has the oem

sensor (Echlin) Part # VSS100. I paid $28. 00. It's an easy fix.

Thanks Guys. It will probably be easier to do the sensor than to change everything. (the only other thing is, the truck shows a lot more miles than actual. Never be able to ask TDR for a mileage badge). Thanks again.
