I'm in the process of changing bearing, seals, races etc.

Is light rust on the spindle bad or leave it? Is there a good way to remove it?

I wouldn't like it on mine. I'd definitely get it off, especially on the seal surface. Some 1000 or 1500 grit wet/dry using WD-40 or the like should clean it up. Cut some 1" X 12" strips, lay one over the top, grab each end and work over the surface going around the entire diameters. Spray w/WD as you go and clean real good w/Brake-kleen or whatever you have handy.

Did this truck sit for a long time? The sealing surface is the only one that needs to be clean. In theory, If you get the same style seal and put it back in the exact same spot it would be good, assuming it didn't leak before. I would want to get the rest cleaned up just to be sure but be gentle on that sealing surface. You could also try polish on cloth strips as Joe described.

Med/fine emery cloth is the key. It will take it off like magic. It will also work on shocks, drive shaft slip yokes, crank shafts. In fact, thats what machine shops use to polish crank shafts. Teflon spray after, let dry, and wipe off. It will leave a protective dry film on the surfaces that arn't regularly lubed. Good luck.
