I want to put a "Y" in my exhaust and split it out and bring the tips in front of my back wheels. Has anyone here done that, and how did you do it?

I heard that it's best to put the "Y" right when the exhaust turns down after the turbo. Plus I don't know exactly where to bring the pipe across the truck for the other side.

I would like to put the "Y" right after the trubo because one of these days I would like to put stacks on... maybe.

Someone told me that if I turned the pipes out before the back wheels I wouldn't have enough back pressure... is that true?

CB_Parker,

When running the exhaust out the driver's side in front of the wheel, you will need to make sure that there is proper clearance and/or heat shielding between the pipe and the fuel tank.

It is doubtful that putting a "Y" right behind the turbo will have any kind of performance advantage, but it will definitely make for a plumbing nightmare

The most common approach is to put the "Y" right where the side/side split is going to be located.

Get stacks, you'll love em  Oo.

Here's a picture of my setup :D

I really want stacks but they might look goofy with my flat bed. I'll post a snapshot of my flatbed and you can give me your opinion.

Backpressure is for naturally aspirated gassers. Our turbo diesels don't need any backpressure. In fact, the less exhaust restriction, the better... ... better turbo spoolup, lower exhaust temps, better mileage... ... .

Got exhaust flow? :-laf Maybe you need one of these :D

I don't think stacks will look goofy at all. In fact, they look even better with a flatbed. Is that a dump bed? If it is, you'll have to use a special joint to connect the piping to the dump bed. That is, if you decide to mount the pipes to the bed. There are many options.

Humm..... where's Philip? ;)

That last image looked muddy, I'll fix them up a little better. I had to play these pictures in photoshop to get them down to 32k.

It's not a dump bed. Whats really nice is it will be easy to come up through it. I will have to but some insulation there so I don't start a fire!

I will probably have to come up and run the pipe either way in front of my storage box, that way it will hide it and I won't have any problems with the fuel tank.

Is my truck going to be louder if I shorten the pipe to come out in front of the wheels or if I get stacks? Either way, I'm taking off several feet of pipe.

Putting the pipe out in front of the wheel or putting on stacks won't make much of a difference in loudness (with muffler). If you take off the muffler and run straight piped, then things can get loud. :D

Oh yeah, I straight piped this truck a week or so after I got it... $15 bucks at the muffler shop. Best $15 I've spent in a long time!

So when it's straight piped, the shorter the pipe, the louder? And will there be a big difference between exitting in front of the wheel instead of behind??? It's like 4 less feet of pipe. While I'm at it, I think I'll replace the whole pipe with 4"... it will give me less back pressure. Will the different size change the tone?

When you change the size and/or length of the exhaust pipe, the tone will change. Since you've already ditched the muffler, then moving the outlet closer to the cab will make more noise inside the cab. Also, you may get a "drone" at certain speeds. Whether or not it's too loud is really a matter of personal preference. Take off the pipe right behind the trans crossmember and put on an elbow facing down and to the side a bit. Go drive it around and see how you like the sound. I did this to test out the noise level before I decided to remove the muffler for good. You can see what happened :D

I'm sure that was pretty loud. What I would like to do is bring the exhaust out like that show truck (2003 dually) in the TDR magazine. They have the pipe running out on the bottom of the cab edge... if I had the money to get a chrome pipe I would do it.

Make a comparison for me... how much louder was it from just removing the muffler and leaving the pipe stock to having the exhaust come out right at the crossmember.

Was it like twice as loud? Just a little bit? Was it more high pitched? I don't want a really high pitched exhaust. If I do anything, it will involve changing to 4". I have a fealing it will make my exhaust have a deeper tone.
