Competition EBAY Twin Turbo Dodge Cummins

Competition Made a few passes with the Rocket

I found a dana 80 3:54 axle for my sled pulling/everyday driver truck. It has a open differential so things need to be changed. I was told by eep to put a spool in it. They know this thing is a daily driver too! I need a little info on what exatly the spool does. Will this lock my axles at all times or what? If so why wouldn't ya just weld everything together then. I am thinking that a spool is not going to be too fun to drive on the street and hard on the tires? I heard a cost of about 450 for the spool where a detroit locker is going to be a lot more. I am thinking i need the locker instead of the spool, or is this just me? Is there any advantage of a spool other than cost over a locker? Lots of questions, i know, but what do you guys think. Matt

I would not install a spool on a daily driver, for the reasons you listed. They can be a real killer on slick roads. Spools are cheaper, lighter, and great for straight line traction.

I havent been able to find a spool on the net for that axle but from what i saw all the other sizes were a lot cheaper. Anyone know of a good source for a detroit locker and what the cost was. ? Matt

Go to reiderracing.com or something like that reidergear they have the best prices and ship it quick. Especially since that are in Michigan. I am thinking I gave like $550 for it but I have given a lot of $550. 00's for this truck so I'm not totally sure about that price. Get the Detroit- DANA 70 HEAVY DUTY Part number from website is-225SL-58B. That should be the one. Don't forget to get the side bearings. They make come in an install kit.

SCS said they could build a spool for the 80.

Greensburg Machine is a good, reasonable source for Detroits, Danas, and driveshafts. 724 837 8233.

I'm running the Detroit, but if I had to do it again on the street, it would be an ARB air locker.

If you need a spool, you are dang near track only and ready for a drop box and a Rockwell.

just to get into a e v w argument here I remember the old days when I started and asked everyone back east if they liked my idea of an air locker... ... ... they said heck no they are junk not very reliable... . my how times have changed... ... . I just run the crappy ole lock right does very good for me, though the ole lock right is HEAVILY modified. . lol I do agree with the air locker always have

What brandon means by Heavily modified, is that the sucker is welded solid just like a spool. LOL, that POS broke half way through the season last year and cost him a t-case and front yoke. :D Good product, i think he got a total of about a 1/4 mile out of it. 300 feet at a time however, so i guess thats not all that bad. LOL:rolleyes:

Oh yeah, to the "Artist formerly known as Sled Puller", don't you mean you used to run the locker, i though you were a drag racer now.

Get a Locker. We rebuilt the factory limited slip with all new parts and only two races into the season the metal discs between the clutchs have no teeth left. I guess 650+ hp and 14" slicks are too much. I thought I was having traction problems a the last race. Can't wait to finish the instal of the Detroit Locker and my new Mach 6's and get back to the track. :D
