I want to thank everyone how has posted information on the replacement of our not so good headlights. After much research on this forum I decided to replace my orignal deadlights with the Dodge Ram Sportlights. I ordered the lights AND the wiring harness from the internet. I will start by saying that I am NOT a professional, but this job was all about patience, and finess. My 2001 2500 had the worst headlights! The removal of the old headlights went easy. The installation of the new lights was initially not so easy. The headlights come on a plastic bracket that does not fit in between the bumper and the sheet metal very easy. I started on the passanger side of the truck, and after an hour figured out that the lens and the bracket are two seperate parts! DUH!! I took them apart, and from there it was all of 20 minutes to get it back together. The drivers side was a whole lot easier!! 30 minutes tops!!

Next came the wiring. I have to say that I am an idiot when it comes to wiring, and that is why I bought the premade harness. There were no instructions with the harness, and initally I was lost, UNTIL I figured it out that the darn thing was idiot proof! Took me 20 minutes to attach and wire tie both harnesses.

I have to say that the new lights are not great, they are fantastic!!! I can see, I can see!

Thank you all agaim for all the advice!!

Sounds like you had a great experience. Please share site where you got your Sport lights and part numbers for them and wiring. This will make it easier for the rest of us idiots :-laf

No offense intended - referring to myself and a few other idiots I know on the site:D

well that would be me in this group of idiots. so now you know one more. nice to meet you. Oo.

Yes, the torq bolts that adjust the aim of the lights come with the new lights. I don't know 01's or 02's very well, but with my 95, the turn signal lights do not come with the new headlights.

sport light conversions

The benefit of doing this conversion,as has been stated a few times on here, is the lights are greatly improved. The headlight switch/dimmer switch no longer suffers the load it was subjected to before. Its job now is very light duty. The Sportlights are now powered directly from battery voltage so ultimate brightness is acheived with virtually no voltage drop. Doing these conversions is not difficult. Even if you are only slightly mechanically inclined, you can accomplish it. I have made up 6-8 of the harnesses and done the complete conversions at my work and about the same at home. The harnesses I make power all four high beam filaments but only the outboard filament for low beam. Powering the inboard low beam filament only provides a little more light but poses a problem from excessive heat , in my opinion. I'll post a few pics. PM me if you would like more details. If you know how to solder and follow a simple schematic, you can make your own harness. On 98. 5 and up, no sheet metal removal is needed. 98 and before, some sheet metal mods are needed to accomadate the inboard sockets.

OE headlight socket hole enlarged to allow for the inboard socket

the harness itself

routing the harness across the rad support

arranging harness with relays at the engine side of left battery. Note relays marked high and low

Connecting fused power to batteries

9007 bulb converted to allow direct plug-in into oe headlight plug

That converted plug gets connected to the three wires you see hanging on the fender on the right

Hope this takes some of the mystery out of this conversion. What an amazing improvement to the lights on these trucks. PM for more info.

Hey Don,

Excellent post. I don't know if you're still monitoring this thread, but did you retain the factory DRLs with your sport light setup? I see you're in Canada, where I believe it is mandatory to have DRLs. I have a Canadian truck, with the DRL, and was wondering if there is anything special that has to be doen to the wiring to retain that feature.

I couldn't find a link on your profile to PM you.

Thanks,

CTD12V

hi guys, i`m in canada also, and i have the sport light too in my 2001 2500. i also have a 2001 3500 flat deck slt with the regular lights and what a huge difference there is in the ability to see at night, this is great info you guys are providing will be very usefull when i tackle my 3500.

I have been looking for a pair of sport light that are fancier and not look like the stock version . i really like that dark ones that have the turn signal and the headlight all in one but the buggers are not available in sport version!!!!! any one ever seen any? thanks
