2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Power Lumbar Problem

I am able to get the sport headlights from a 2001 2500 gas, but how would I hook them up to my truck. It has two bulbs compared to my one, along with a quad beam relay and fuse. Would I be able to use something like a pigtail, then run both bulbs from my existing wiring and relays, without overheating or blowing fuses?

Thanks,

. ". . . then run both bulbs from my existing wiring and relays . . "

Your non-Sport model year 2000 Ram uses zero relays in the headlight circuit. The OEM wiring and switch is minimal. You will need to make or purchase a harness. SUVlights can supply parts or custom harnesses.

As long as you are making up a harness, I suggest you wire it so the outboard low beam filaments burn with all four high beam filaments when using high beam. The inboard low beam filaments are not wired by D/C.

I transplanted the Sport lamps into my model year 2000 non-Sport Ram eight months ago. My harness uses 12 gauge wire and relays. I burn all eight filaments on high beam. The 430 watts of forward light is a vast improvement over the 130 watts D/C provided. No hint of meltdown yet.

Hi there! Welcome to the TDR.

If you have not already done so, start by searching the TDR site for information: You will notice on the forums home page a 'search forums' function. Click on it; then, insert "sport headlights" or "sport headlight" (without the quotation marks) as a keyword, and you will have a good evening's read. What you want to know has been explored and explained before.

If, after you peruse all of the archived subject matter, you still have questions, post again, and you will receive help.

The sport headlight conversion is one of the better mods for a 2nd gen truck.

Cheers!

Tom

Tommy T is 100% on that one! Good modification to your truck! You might also look into a search for "brightbox" since, that is the unit I used to get my sport lights to function. Good luck, and let us know how things turn out.

Chris-- emailed you the instructions for the conversion. go with heavier wiring than stock. you'll get more power to the lights and they will be brighter. most of us are running all filaments on low beam and all on high. so far i haven't heard of ANY heat related issues. Good luck on one of the best mods you can do.

does anyone have a picture of thsi set-up ona 2000? i'm very interested in putting this on my truck! how hard is it to put in and do you need to do modifications to the truck besides pluging in a harness?

The physical setup is the same in the headlamp area for Sport or non-Sport model years 2000-2002. Earlier second generation trucks need some minor, hidden surgery for the transplant.

The work is in the harness if you make your own.

Paul--do you need the wiring directions?... if you do... PM me your email addy and i will ship them out to you. not hard at all to do ... just plan on a whole day to do it right, and indoors if you choose to do it in cooler weather. (fingers don't work too well in the cold). on;y pics i have of my truck are before i did the headlights.

i also left you a PM

I'm interested in a wiring diagram too, tntway. Send them to -- email address removed -- if possible.

Thanks,

Ben

I'd like a copy too please. Sports are HIGH on the priority list for my 01. The OEM lights are embarassing to say the least, as far as light output goes.

Did I hear right? NO, physical changes to the existing truck (01) to get them to fit? Is a wrecking yard a good place to start for a set?

I just was looking at the SUVlights website, and see their wiring harness for the correct bulbs. Would we have to use two of those harnesses for this conversion?

Ben

"didn't think it would be an all day thing" If a harness is available (purchased or self-made prior to the R&R of the lamps) your downtime should be an hour or two. The lamps are attached with three bolts. There are three plastic pushpins holding a lamp-to-grill rubber welt. Plan on reusing these pushpins—the Mopar parts counter is real proud of these little pins at about $2+ EACH. There are some barbed projections on the lamp that hold the lamp in place with the bolts removed. Pull straight forward to remove the lamp.

"Did I hear right? NO, physical changes to the existing truck (01) to get them to fit?" Yes.

"I just was looking at the SUVlights website, and see their wiring harness for the correct bulbs. Would we have to use two of those harnesses for this conversion?" You would need to communicate with SUV Lights. The harness you need for this conversion is a non-standard, custom harness. Here is the critical information to give to someone making a harness for your 2000-2002 Ram: The OEM headlight wiring uses switched ground. A 9004 socket (removed from OEM bulb) is used to control a 9004 bulb and a 9007 bulb. The low beam filament of the 9004 bulb is not used. This can be done with a single custom harness—wires will cross the top of the radiator—or with a harness on the right and another harness on the left. Whatever harness configuration you use, a harness with relays and large gauge wire will give you brighter lights than the factory wiring on a Sport truck, and will take a big load off the headlight switch.

If you plan to purchase the Brite Box, use a single harness—one BriteBox won't control two separate harnesses.

"Is a wrecking yard a good place to start for a set?" Maybe. I have aftermarket Sport lamps from Import Vision Motorsports . My only complaint with their Depo brand lamps is the cheap Asian rubber welt. I reused the welt from my OEM lamps.

good post

This is better than anything I have seen yet. Only reason i am putting in my . 02 is that it is easier to find when i get time to do the conversion. [look it up on user control panel] You guys are nice to offer wiring instructions, but won't waste your time asking until I decide to convert.
