For those looking for an acceptable kit to hook up the sport light conversions, look no further. Here is a response I received from Daniel Stern Lighting. He quoted me a price of around $84 for the kit:
My big general "how to wire up your headlamps right" article is at
http://lighting.mbz.org/tech/how_to/relays
There is nothing super-tricky about wiring up lamps like the Sport lamps, that's why paying the Mopar price for the complete harness is a total waste of money. My package to do this includes:
2ea 9004 "male" plug, these plug into vehicle's existing headlamp socket and provide three individual wires.
3ea Extra Heavy Duty 40A dual-output relays, with lock-together brackets and Extra Heavy Duty terminals.
3ea Extra Heavy Duty inline fused fuseholders, these use
commonly-available GBC-type fuses.
2ea 9004 and 2ea 9007 "female" sockets with large-gauge wires. These, obviously, plug onto the back of the headlamp bulbs in the new headlamps.
All components are equipped to accept properly-large (12ga)
wire... I'm a Mopar man myself, but their headlamp wiring is the pits!
Actual wire is not included, because it is available everywhere and
everyone wants different colors and needs different lengths. My package includes all the hard-to-find hardware.
The actual wire-up is easy, see the article I referenced above. The only real "gotchyas" on the Ram installation are:
1) The inner 9004 lamps are NOT used in low beam mode. Only in high beam mode.
2) You still want to stick with standard-wattage bulbs, which with the Sport headlamps are plenty good enough WHEN FED PROPERLY with the relays and good wiring. Suggest Sylvania Xtravision (pink box) bulbs. Overwattage 9004 and 9007 bulbs are still a really bad idea.
3) The reduced-voltage high-beam Daytime Running Lamp system on the non-sport trucks in Canada can make an issue when you feed the lamps properly. Best bet is to change to turn signal DRLs; very easy-to-install module goes for $45 here
