Folks -

I have a 2006 Quad Cab SLT+, auto, with 10,000 miles on it. 100% stock. Zero problems of any kind until now. The driver's side window spontaneously sprang a hairline crack just above the top of the driver's door this morning. (IT's NOT THE NOT THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD. IT's THE WINDOW IN THE DRIVER's DOOR. )

I have had no impact, undue jarring, or even any door slamming. In the course of driving a total of about 20 miles today, the crack has spread so that it runs about 1" above the top of the driver's side door, completely parallel to the door, from the A-pillar to the back of the door.

I called my dealer, and they are getting me a service date for a replacement window, but I am concerned that this is going to let go before I get there, in a potentially explosive kind of way.

I'm going to put cardboard and tape in the truck if it does go before I get a replacement appointment.

My questions are, in order of importance:

1) Should I put some type of clear mask tape on the inside of the glass, in the hope that I won't be instantly blinded if it does let go?

2) Should I skip the tape be/c it is safety glass, and should break more or less in place, and just cascade down all over the door and the left side of me, but leave my eyeballs unscathed?

3) How the heck did this happen? I surmise that the frame surrounding the bottom of the window is either out of tolerance, or has gone out of whack, such that the window is starting to fail.

Thanks for any replies in advance.

I would but clear tape over the crack and upto the top of the window and down a few inches. If it should decide to go, you won't end up with 2000 beads of glass all over the inside of the truck, and maybe even inside the door. This happened to me back in '69 the window was down when it shattered, the dealer replaced the glass, but didn't vacuum the inside of the door. Rattled until I finished their job.

The window probably got a nick that the crack started from. Who knows where from.

welcome to the club . I had driver side and pass side rear replaced. don't worry dodge uses windshield type glass now in side windows, will not shatter. mine didnt. I hear it was a vendor problem

Thanks, guys.

Other than being a PITA to get fixed, I won't worry about it.

TDR on the job!!

By the way, this is my first diesel and I like the truck. Comfortable, good storage and space for me and my 80 pound Black Lab, and, I love to roll the power on in 4th gear overdrive!!!

My dog's name is "Diesel".

I guess I should call the next one "Cummins"!

Reagrds to all, and thanks-Mawgie

All the glass in the truck is tempered glass so it won't be explosive in any way. I'd go a head and get either duct tape or clear packing tape and tape over the crack. Then I'd probably put an X with the tape on the window also. It should hold it together temporarily. I knocked my back glass out 2 times and both times it never exploded or anything. It just spidered but stayed in tact. I duct taped both of them until I could get it replaced.
