Alcan5000 Road Rally Autoweek Story

You already own a Glock, so you have the background to understand their basic feel and operation. My brother-in-law owns the XD45 and has been his primary carry piece for the last few years. It seems to be holding up very well.

I have shot both the XD and the Glock 30. I'm not a fan of the feel of the split trigger on the XD, but can't say anything else negative about either of them. If you are looking for a polymer 45 ACP, you probably cant go wrong either way.

got a glock 23gen 4, does not print too much. shoots good, got tridium ghost ring on the rear and high post on the front, in the pants holster. .

Personally, I like the Springfield over the Glock for the grip safety. As for other options for compact carry, you might take a look at Para-Ordnance or Sig, IMHO. . 45 is my favorite cal in sidearms!

It's mainly feel in your hand and what you're used to shooting. After that, it's pretty subjective. Since I like 45's in a 1911, I'm inclined towards an XD. You could get used to a Glock, but how it feels in your hand means a lot too. The Glock feels a bit more awkward for me, and that's just a subjective preference as well. Since you own one, that's not likely an issue.

Most people that get deep into analyzing the Glock & XD lean towards the Glock, but the only differences that seem significant are differences for competition shooters. Otherwise everything I know or have heard puts both guns more or less equal. I did a lot of reading on it before I went one way another a few years back. After learning a lot more about the differences between the two than I ever needed to know, I concluded nuanced differences simply don't matter to me.

When I compared using them, I sense a little less flip on firing the Glock, but it's not an issue for me. Again, that seems more of a competition/ rapid-fire thing that isn't a concern for me. The only real knock I've heard on XD's is the finish. I haven't seen it, but mine's only 2 years old and in a safe with a humidifier. I also believe in firearm maintenance.

It really comes back to preferences. Since you already shoot a Glock, you might stay with it rather than learning another feel for the firing angle. As far as a 45 goes, I'd be more inclined towards a Sig in the larger caliber if I wanted to carry 45. The Glock was originally designed around a 9mm. If I had to buy one or the other in 45, I'd get another XD. My XD is a 40. My only experience with a Glock is range guns and trying friends at the range. Both are very smooth. I'll probably never own one. I don't knock 'em, but for carry, it has to feel right first.

I just bought a SA XDm 45 acp 3. 8 Compact two weeks ago, I have a Glock 30 in 45 acp and also a Colt 45 1911 - I have to say it is one outstanding gun, very comfortable to shoot, nice weight, good balance, just a world of difference from the other two. It is now my CCW and primary choice for everything, sold my Glock yesterday.

You might want to go to the XD forums to get more info about the SA.

Thanks for the input. Thought I would see what else is out there and trying to find no nonsense reviews is not easy. As Sarj said I need to get my hands on a few of these to see how they feel. Anyone have experience with Kimber, I was looking at the Ultra Carry II as well.

Kimber's aren't what they were ten years ago, but still are a good sidearm. I think they're overpriced, for the most part. Personally, for that kind of money, I'd think you could go with a good H & K USP, a Colt Double Eagle Officer's model, or something like an Ed Brown or Les Baer personal carry..... (or TWO "other" brand pistols, such as Springfield, Taurus, etc!!). The prior two are double action, something I really like for concealed carry, and I think a tactical and safety advantage. One reason I like the Springfield over the Glock. Handguard safety, cocked indicator, and just overall a well made pistol. Their gas nitriding system used to make their rock hard finish is equal to Glock's, plus better quality control, IMO... .

On the lower end of the spectrum, I'd look at the EAA Witness and Taurus' PT 145 compact. The EAA is a Hi-Power clone, and the one's I've had shot really well. If you don't have overly large hands, it's not a bad choice, and easily can find one with a caliber conversion... . in fact, since you're in Texas, I might know where one is around an hour from you... . It's an EAA Witness in . 45 ACP, with a . 40S&W conversion upper, and three hi-cap mags for each... . you can even shoot it first, if you want.....

If you really love the 1911 frame, the Taurus PT1911's have been superb for the money. I've shot several right out of the box that shot really well. As well as any Kimber I've picked up in the last few years, and less finicky about ammo..... Also, the Rock Island armory sidearms have been pretty decent, although I've seen problems with barrel lockup and magazine latch engagement.....

The Para-Ordnance can't be overlooked here. They make a fine firearm, and for the money are one of the best, IMHO. I like the double stack mags, and have shot several, including the P10, P12, P13, P14, Warthog..... occasionally, they'll be picky about ammo. The compact models seem to be more prone to this for some reason, maybe as the ramp is built into the frame? If you have large hands, this is a good model for you to try.

And then there's the SigSauer version of the 1911. Finished work is second to none. The upper line Kimbers don't have anything over on this handgun. After shooting one, and looking at several others, it will probably be my next purchase, if I can get into one right.

Oh, and gun show at Mesquite Big Town Convention center this weekend, 4th-5th..... thought you might want to know that... . :D

The EAA is a clone of a CZ75. That is unless they've changed since they made the two I own.

Edit: I have one of the older Kimbers in 38 super. Nice gun. One of my EAA's are 9x23. I LOVE that caliber.
FWIW the Kimber digests the 9x23 w/o any probelms with a heavy recoil spring.

Right, right, but if I recall correctly, the CZ75 was built on one of John Brownings auto loading pistol patents, which is the same patent Browning used for the Hi-powers... . not to be argumentative, I think we're both on the same road... The IMI Baby Eagles are very similar, as well, only with a hammer let-down safety.

I do like the 38 Supers. Great ballistics and performance. And the older Kimbers have a good repuation for a reason!!

I dont like plastic guns JMO

BIG, I'd have to agree, but I do think they have a place... . One of the reasons I like a Glock is that I can pick one up for next to nothing, it's fairly accurate, I can stow it anywhere, and I know it's ready to fire when I reach for it. And if it's dirty, beat up, or worn terribly, it really doesn't hurt the value. Hard to beat that... . You really can't just leave an old Colt lying in the floorboard after it gets rained on. Well, I can't, anyway. I can just hear and feel the rust trying to sprout!!!

IMHO, Buy the Glock. I've owned one Springfield a XD9 which new out of the box shot 6 to 8" groups at 25 yards. What a piece of junk and it now sits in a box in my safe. I checked around at the time I bought the Springfield and was told a small police agency in my area replaced about two hundred barrels on Springfield XD9's. Their reason was poor accuracy and Springfield's apparent reluctancy to replace the barrels. I was told that the agency replaced the bad barrels with Bar-sto barrels.

On a side note another small agency in my area uses the XD45 and they are extremely happy with the accuracy.

Six to eight inch groups at 25 yards sucks when my Beretta 92f is capable of two to three inch groups at the same yardage.

i really cant speak for the glock but i love my xdm . 40. it just feels natural and comes up on target like its an extension of my hand.

I bought a xd40 subcomp in nov and love it it is a great cancel carry gun and it shoots great too. I also have a 1911 kimber that I have had for 15 years and love it to but it is to big to carry all the time and hide it when I want. With 9 rounds in the short mag and 12 rounds in the exted mag. I picked the spring field XD over the Glock because it felt better in my hand. The XDMs are nice to but cost more. I don't think you can go wrong with a spring field xd/xdm.

I agree. I only have one which is enough. I bought it for the sole reason that I don't want one of my good ones sitting in an evidence locker for three years.

That's a good point, too..... but I wasn't gonna say it!! :D

I've had some H & Ks, but never got a lot of rounds through 'em. They were accurate, ate just about any ammo I put through it, and seemed well made overall. They moved on pretty quick, as I got into them right, so they made good trading material... . Pretty pricey. Those were USP's.
