In the process of rebuilding my NV4500 due to a spun bearing, found now one of the bearing races that is supposed to be pressed or persuaded with a hammer, now goes in by hand. It is not loose where I can wiggle it around but I can get it all the way in with my fingers.

Any suggestions, like Loctite it in, use JB Weld, ect... Can the case be professionally repaired??? It is the lower cluster gear toward the rear of the transmission.

Anyone know where to locate another case if that becomes necessary???

Any comments would be greatly appreciated...

It's supposed to be that way. That rear bearing race should be able to be put in and out by hand - a tight fit (like you said, not be able to wiggle it). The front race is the one that's press fit into the case. You set the end play of the countershaft by installing shims behind that bearing race - if it had to be hammered in you wouldn't be able to check the end play.

STEVE YOU MADE MY DAY!!!!

I am glad you said that, but I still have to wonder about what keep the race from spinning in the case. The way I see it(Not that that is the correct way) If there was a severe load on that bearing, or it is starts to wear and spins with resistance, what keeps it from spinning in the case???

I do see what you are saying Steve. Maybe my thinking is a little off, although I have seen a carrier bearing race spin in a differentials.

On more question for Steve as you have probably been down this road before, are you speaking from actual experience with that race or are you obtaining that knowledge from a rebuild book.

Thank once again for your insight. I WILL SLEEP MUCH BETTER TONIGHT!!!!

Experience - I walked out into the garage and checked out the one I have to send back for my core charge that's in pieces to make sure. I also checked in the Dodge manual, it's been a few months since I was in there. But, that's a LOOONG story.

Once again, I CAN NOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!!! Thanks for taking a moment to check.

I think my membership to TDR was the best upgrade I ever did to my Dodge truck!!!

Now I can continue to put my truck back together and get out of my Dad's loaner car "83 Toyota Cressida with 265,000 miles.
