I've noticed my alternator bearings making noise :{ (sounds like the rear bearing, I used a hose to listen). Is there anyway to lube them, or just replace the whole unit. I'll check the Dodge manual for procedures, and of course I'll take any advice on how to replace or repair. Best place to buy? Cummins? Dodge-dealer$, NAPA. Thanks in advance :D for any help, Patrick.

In the past I usually just take mine into my favorite alternator/starter shop and have them rebuilt. Fortunately on mine, I haven't had to do that yet :)

I just replaced mine for the same reason, and paid $128 for a quality remanufactured from a local parts house (not the el-cheapo chain store garbage;)).

Personally, it isn't worth my time to shop around for things like this. I'd pick one up at my local NAPA. You have to wonder about them 48. 00 "rebuild" specials.

Did you guys read the interesting article in the latest mag?... ..... something about rebuilt vs remanufactured. This has been John Deere's thing for years... ... cheap rebuild or quality reman Deere parts.

Thinking Cummins parts are called ReCon

Detroit is Reliabilt I think.

I second what GreyWolf said, if you're lucky enough to have a good starter/alternator shop, have them put it on the test stand and test it out for ya. Might find nothing wrong with it, maybe a stretched or loose drive belt, or tensioner ??

At 325,000 miles my original alternator went from squaking to no juice out in a very short period of time - so keep an eye on the alternator, etc. Be very careful on what goes back in if a good local alternator shop is not available. What you pay for is what you get on this deal . . . . .
