I went to start my truck yesterday and when the grids came on they made a steady squealing sound. I turned the key off and tried again but the squeal started again. So I just started up the truck and went to work. When I get there I shut truck off and wait a minute, then try key on and get no squeal. The grids were only on a second or so however. But before even that instant I heard the squeal. Any ideas.

Florida and the grid heaters are cycling? Must be down parka season?

Sounds (no, ... OK, pun intended) as if you got a bad relay. If they don't fully close, they will chatter, dance, buzz, squeel, etc.

Try disconnecting them one at a time and see if the noise goes away.

Another thought is to switch the coil leads. We're have another discussion on another thread if one or both relays cycle in mild weather.

Check that your airfilter doesn't have a hole eaten though it by mice. They may have been sitting on top of the grid heater having lunch when you gave them the hot foot causing them to squeal in anguish. ;)

Thats not even funny:( The mice around my dads place build nests in the air cleaners, eat wiring harnesses, chew all the stuffing out of the seats and move it all into the head liner and have babies up there and **** and I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER all over. They chew through fuel lines and plastic defroster ducts and build nests in the heater. They chew the blades off the heater motors and chew the rubber off the air valves in the air ducts. They have even chewed right through some 110 volt copper wires under the house!!!! I guess they chewed the netral side only. The other thing they do is chew through the cords on the ultrasonic pest repelers that he has put around to stop them. Oh yea they really like it when we put out poison. They take the poison pellets all around to store up for future meals before it kills them. Actually I don't think it kills them anymore. They are like cockroches and have genectically modified themselves to survive the poison.

You guys think I'm kidding but I'm not. :--)

Bill,

you funny guy:)

I guess I'll check the relays. If anyone thinks of any other ideas let me know.

Thanks

drees1

it only squeals when I hit the key switch and wait for the start lite to go out - as in while the grids are heating up.

My 91 used to do that... Every single time, almost like it was whining... . As soon as it went out, it was ok. Now I am having problems with my grid heater on my 98... . I think the grids are bad.
