Fellas, my apologies for the question that has probably been asked 1000 times, but I'm one of those parnoid types and a Newbie to TDR.

Before you all start rolling your eyes and asking why I did this, just let me say, I didn't read "enough" in TDR before buying and adding the 4" Monster Exhaust and AFE Stage II Intake System.

Just intalled the above this past week. I was driving home tonight from Hunting Camp, temp was about 43, it was raining lightly and very foggy. While maintaining a speed of about 40 mph in 5th gear A horrible noise came out from under the hood, :--) sounded a lot like an "issue" with bearings, like what I am sure some of you have heard when a belt pulley begins to fail or fails. This noise lasted about 2 - 3 seconds and stopped and did not do it again after driving another 35 miles home.

I stopped and checked everything I could under the hood, all looked fine, there was no indication of a problem with the gauges nor did it generate any codes.

Is it possible the new air intake system with the Pro Guard 7 filter & torque tube allowed "moisture" into the turbo unit and "started" messing with the unit?

I imagine the first trip to the Dealer and my warranty is voided for "any" air intake related "issues"! I can't say it added any power but it sure makes it sound like a "Big Rig", if that is what you like. Personally I am not sure if I like it or not and think I wasted my money and potentially, by continued use will shorten the life of my motor! :(

How about some advice from some of you long-time TDR folks with miles and miles on your current and past trucks!

I'm all ears and desperate for some "solid" facts! :{

In case it helps, the truck only has 28k+ miles on it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of turbo whine!

It's perfectly normal and most of us like the sound. Your truck was doing it before you changed the exhaust and intake, just not as loud. It's just the sound of your turbocharger blades biting off chunks of air to compress (called boost) and force-feed into the engine.

I have an '03,HO, 6-sp. , with a magnaflow 4" exhaust and an AFE ProGuard-7 intake system. It sounded pretty good so, I removed the silencer ring and it got quite a bit louder. Then, this past summer at Thunder in Muncie, I bought the AFE Torque Tube and installed it. Now, it sounds like an F-16 intake. It's really loud! Loud enough that people walking down the street will turn around to see what's coming. You might want to go back to the stock intake system instead of the Torque Tube. Hope this helps. Joe F. (Buffalo).

And, as far as your warranty, you should be OK. My dealer had no problem with all of the stuff I did, until the fueling box (Edge EZ) went on. My lift was fine, the exhaust was fine and so was the AFE ProGuard 7 kit. They had no warranty issues till I started the hardcore stuff. You should be fine, now if this was a ford 6. 0 board... :D

Pawpaw, I knowwhat the turbo "whine" is, this is very obvious now and I don't have a problem with it. It was the loud, "nasty" noise that I heard for a few seconds that terrified me.

Buffalo, Yeh, it's noisey and thus far I can't say I really dislike it but I am lost as to the noise ... the other noise. What is the "Silencer Ring"? I have likely removed it since the air intake system is from the turbo unit ... back out to the filter, everything was changed.

MWright, I hope you are right, that the intake system doesn't void/restrict my warranty.

Nick, No, I had not "just" turned the defrost on, it had been on mix for about an hour at this point. I actually tried to turn the a/c on to see if that would duplicate the sound as I know what you are talking about but nothing happended. I'm about to run out to drop off my ATV trailer and ATV for storage and fuel up, it's still wet/damp out and I am anxious to see if it makes the noise again. I must say I'm a little fearful as I am leaving Friday morning for a 600 mile trip south hauling my camper ... wish me an "uneventful" trip!

Thanks for all the input!

I just went back and re-read my post. I didn't mean to sound so condescending. Sorry about that.

I thought it was the whine you were describing. It's loudest on mine under just the circumstances you described... 40 MPH and not in high gear (mine's an auto). As soon as it shifts, the whine almost completely goes away.

Is it possible that your serpentine belt lost a little off the edge? If a bit of reinforcing cord got wrapped tight around a pully or the idler, It might make quite a racket until it burned off from the friction.

Bob

I agree, take a hard look at your serpintine belt. Look for damage to the edges. I remember reading some posts about a few trucks eating their belt for some reason. Maybe you'll find that thread with a search. You could pick up an extra belt and throw it under your seat before your trip. I have kept one in my truck since new.

Oh yea, have a good and uneventful trip.

!

its likely that you dont have the Silencer Ring removed it is inside the turbo unit in front of the impellers its just a metal ring that had a snp ring holding it in that is removed with 2 strait screw drivers. then the ring falls out this will increase turbo whisle by about 10 times .

As for the squeal NOT SURE ??? maybe a critter got in there ??? did it ever happen before or sence?? if it has You may be correct with the belt pulley going south assumption.

Good luck

Bob, didn't take your comment straight out as "condescending", figured it was just some sort of "twisted" humor, like I would expect from a "Bubba" driving a diesel truck ... like myself for example! :-laf

The belt suggestion is a good one, I did check it, briefly, in the dark. I will check it again based on the refrences by several of you ... in good daylight this time. I think Brian has a good idea, I'll grab an extra belt before I split ... although I am not sure I could change it on the road?

Thanks again for the input, I'll let you know what I find! Oo.

I dunno folks. It could be that the bolts came loose on his exhaust manifold. When that happened on my 99, it was a terrible squeel. If I remember right it did it under load. If it is a terrifying sound I wonder if it is maybe that instead of the turbo. To me the turbo sound is kinda comforting.

A COOL BIT OF POETRY FROM WILDCATS WEB SITE ... .

The highway stretches on, dark and foreboding in the colorless night. Grainy asphalt, yellow and white painted lines that disappear into the distance. It gently slopes away into the invisible ditches that mark its borders. A cool breeze plays across its surface, rustling the grass along its shoulders.

As the night sky is lit by a distant thunderstorm, the highway speaks to you of the many battles fought. The countless victims claimed. The eternity of its being.

And its plans for you.

You feel a chill as you check your gauges one last time. Oil pressure. Fuel pressure. Exhaust gas temp. All in the green. Its now or never.

You feather the throttle, watch the RPMs come up, and feel the rumble of your mighty diesel. As the turbocharger begins to spool, a faint whine against the growl of your exhaust, you feel it:

Power. Confidence.

A smile plays across your face, as you release the clutch and punch the fuel. As your tires rip into the asphalt, you are faced with the realization that this is your life.

This is your highway.

AAHHHHHHH NOW Doesnt every one feal like a hug
