If I wanted to change from a single rear wheel to dual rear wheels would I only have to change the hubs? I have the big 11. 5 rear and would like to go to Duals out back since I recently went up in size on the 5th wheel. I would also be changing the front to the larger hubs and wheels if possible. I am not sure of what needs to be done to complete this. Any input on this would be helpfull.

Thanks

I have considered changing out to DRW as well. Talked to Six States Dist. in Salt Lake City about it, he didn't have part numbers for me, but said I would need to replace axle housings and axles on the rear for sure. He thought the everything else on the rear (brakes, etc) would remain the same.

I've looked all over the intermountain west for a wrecked dually to just buy the rear axle, but I've come up empty. When I get some spare time, I'm going to drop by a dealer and try to get part numbers for the SRW and the DRW to see exactly whats different.

I'd like to go to 19. 5 wheels (alum) but for SRW they are impossible to find. Just to make that switch, I'd go to a dually... oh well.

If you find out anymore, I'd be glad to learn more about it. Good Luck!

WAckerman, if you want aluminum 19. 5" wheels for your SRW, call Les Schwab and order a set of Vision 81 wheels ($229/wheel). Brentz Wheels also make them but are huge $$$$. I called Rickson a couple of weeks ago and they don't expect to be back in production of their aluminum wheels until late fall and have a large waiting list. I'm picking up a set of Visions when I head south next week since no one in the Great White North sells them. As far as converting to a DRW, I considered the conversion too but was planning on using billet wheel spacers onto the original rear axle to make up the required width and then use the mega cab dual fenders for my short box 3500. The dually hub adapters should bolt up to your front rotors with no problem (measure bearing/hub flange diameter) and then the dually wheel will bolt straight on to it. I don't think it would be too much work, but not cheap once you add the cost of the rear fenders / bodywork.

I looked into this a little while ago. Isn't the rear axle on a dually a little narrower and the need for the different axle housing?

Yup, 3" on each side narrower on the duallys by my Dads measurements. That is the reason for the new axles and housings.

MarcS, Thanks for the tip on the Vision's. Thats a pretty reasonable price. I'm just not fond of the little nobs all around. Oh well. I would consider the chromed steel Ricksons if they were available, but then again I'm not in a hurry. I like the dually look, so swaping out the rear is temping just to have the dually look, but as you said, cost may be prohibitive.

CDonaldson, I've been a little wary of the adaptors, but I have no real reason to be afraid of them. I worry that they may be the weak link in the setup? Have you used them before?

WAckerman.

I did 2 Fords with the spacer conversions. Never had a bit of trouble with them. One I did with a fiberglass fender addition to the stock bed and the other was done with a Bradford bed. Both turned out real nice.

I would certainly consider converting my 2006 SRW MegaCab before buying a new DRW truck if I wanted a DRW. I actually have paused a few times and considered it REAL HARD lately.

I decided to cut down the truck stable and sold one of my conversion trucks, down to two trucks around the place, one dually Ford and the Mega. I just may get rid of the other Ford, if I do, I will convert the Mega and put on a Bradford bed.

Everything will bolt up and go down the road just like it came out of a factory.

CD

So with the SRW axle, can you just bolt on the dually wheels? According to the above posts, the truck will then be 6" wider than a stock dually. Is this correct? Would spacers only be needed for the front?

I think what Spooled-up is saying is that all you need to do is remove the adaptor your dually already has on it to run a non-dually wheel.

Wouldn't it be cheaper and better to sell your truck and purchase a truck with DRW?

Well, maybe not cheaper, but certainly better.
