i have a 4inch stack,it has the 3inch pipe till it hooks into the elbow then its 4inch up. my problem is the law says its to loud. i was thinking instead of putting a muffler on it,just going with a turbo back mbrp aluminized exhaust. and just have my pipe come out in the normal place. plus then i will have 4 inch all the way back. what do you think?thanks

Unless a cop bothers you, don't worry about it. Drove a straightpiped Mack for ~6yrs, and have had a straight exhuat (with and without stacks) for almost 5 years. Never been bothered.

Just be smart with the go pedal when johnny law is around and you should be ok. I was followed down the highway and off the exit ramp, so I just made sure I went easy on the acceleration too avoid the smoke and noise. He eventually left me alone.

As far as smoke is concerned, I could be wrong, but if you pass emissions then they really can't touch you. I make a couple simple mods to my truck when I go in to get it tested and come out fine (I have no cat). With noise, I believe in some states they require it be no louder than a certain decibel level.

just look at all the semis pulling gravel trains, half them are straight piped and belching smoke, and they never get bothered. ive never had a muffler on my trucks for over 6 years, and never been bothered by the cops for smoke or noise. i fogged a cop out once trying to get on the highway cause someone wouldnt let me in so hammer time and didnt notice the cop behind me, he just drove right on pass and never looked at me.

Like bwm471 I would say read the laws carefully. I have not read them in a while, but I belive in the state of Michigan if they are a certain distance above the ground you do not need a muffler. Granted most of the police on the street do not actually know the motor vehicle code as it pertains to stuff like that. I went to a meeting where the state DOT officer for the county didn't know the answer to half the questions we asked him, while the Farm Beareu motor vehicle rep knew the answer and where to find it in the motor vehicle code.
