I have been away from the forum for a while. Life got interesting.... I was considering adding a TST PMCR 49 to the truck in my signature. Couple "friends" told me this was an old school practice that is now obsolete as it is too hard on the fuel system and I should just get a tuner. I've been entirely too busy with other things to stay on top of what is and is not the best way to add power. I have a whole bunch of TDR magazines still in the wrapper. Maybe if I unwrap and read them the light will come on, but I doubt it so I decided to ask here.

Yep, old school. Tuner and a custom tune is the preferred way. Smarty UDC Pro and HP Tuners for pre-06 trucks, add EFI Live to that list fro 06+ trucks. Much better results with a good custom tune than boxes.

I had the TST PMCR 49, and it gave me issues. Every so often it would set codes and cause injectors to shut off. I had it stacked with a Smarty. Thankfully the Smarty had the ability to read the codes and I could clear them and it would run fine until the next time. Pulling a 15K trailer, I did not need to have this happen at any time especially pulling any grades. I removed the TST about 3 tears ago and have not had this problem since

If you want a good indication of the possible problems that stacking can give you, unwrap TDR issue 95 and read The Rest of the Story on page 109.

Stacking, aside from the additional potential problems that can arise due to multiple failure points of the boxes themselves, as well as longer term issues arising from excessive fueling and timing, is obsolete due to the HP available with MUCH finer control of fuel and timing by using custom tuning of the ecm. IOW-- sell your boxes and get some tunes for EXACTLY the way you drive/use your truck. DO be sure to use a reputable and well reviewed tuner and program. Many people here like Smarty UDC, but others are also available.
