I have a tendency to leave the truck running in idle when hooking up and unhooking the 5th wheel for extended periods of time.

I was told yesterday by some Ford guy that that's bad for the engine: the EGTs fall below 300F and that causes "stacking" (build-up of moisture on top of the heads). Apparently the 6. 0 PSDs have a built-in 'feature' that automatically raises the RPM by 100-150 after 5 minutes of idling.

Is this really as big a problem as he was making it out to be?

Thanks. Alain.

Mine idles at about 320 degrees. So if he's solely basing this off the below 300 number he's wrong.

Does he have any idea what temp water boils at?

It's 212. :-laf :-laf

I don't know how long it takes, but our CTD's"ramp up"to 850 rpm or so if they idle for a while or if the temp is low.

Not a problem.

5 minutes? Nothing to worry about,, I idle this long waiting for some traffic lights here in my town!

I idle mine all the time ..... pumping fuel, quick stops at the store, you name it. I carry my remote and lock the doors! It's cool in summer and warm in winter, lol.

I have been told that it is hard on the oil though. As the cyclinder temp cools, incomplete combustion starts, and you know where the extra fual goes? In the oil.

I have also been told that the cylinder will glaze a bit from the unburnt fuel ... ... ..... just get in and romp it!

"Stacking" Not quite, the idle up feature is suppose to help keep engine temps up during extended idling in cold weather, but remember diesel or gas, idling is really not that good at all. The reality of it is that if your actually drive your truck, your will find that you have no choice but to idle the thing from time to time, just remember as sweet as the engine sounds, if you aren't going to use it under load in less than 5-10, just shut it down. Fuel wash down will glaze cylinders, and that damage is not repairable without a tear down.

P. S. ... ... . but "Stacking" ROTFLMAO :D

Sorry... ... just thought of something. Moisture build-up on the top of the heads, not a problem providing that the head gasket, block and head have good integrity, yup just another reason to buy a cummins :)

P. S. again... ... any one heard of the stink that International is in with CAT about HEUI injectors? I was wondering if it was a wives tale or real. I heard that CAT has a lawsuit filed on International for copying their HEUI injectors. I thought that International justed used CAT injectors in their engines WTF
