I know there are plenty of 2 micron filter threads, but I took a different approach and some here have PM'd me about what I did so here goes:

After I got the 06, I knew, like many here, I wanted better fuel filtration. The FASS on the 01 is great, but I thought I'd try to keep the stock filter, WIF and heater. So I looked high and low for a filter head that would satisfy my desires. I settled on a Stanadyne FM1000. It is rated at more flow and pressure than most other filters I looked at and was supposed to be 98% efficient nominal at 2 microns. This was all before Richard came out with his 2 micron system at GFS. Got the filter head at my local Cummins repair shop and it came with a 5 micron short (4 inch) filter. Here's where the trouble started.

Turns out, Stanadyne doesn't make a 2 micron filter for this head as their literature says (although they said they get a lot of request and may offer it in the future). Needless to say I was kinda torqued about this but, not to be deterred, I embarked on a long search for a suitable filter. I found that Donaldson offers the same filter head and they do have 2 micron filters, both the 4 inch and 8 inch. It is only 95% effecient though, but that's good enough for me. The filters where hard to find and I had to get 3, but it works.

See the photos for the install. The head is rather large but it fit fine. Used a piece of 4x6 inch angle aluminum that the machine shop had sitting around and some aluminum flat bar. It fit perfect where the APPS usually goes. I would like to use the larger 8 inch filter and I think it would fit without interfering with the CP3 but it would be close. If I could get one of those filters with the ability to return it, I may give it a try later. Raising the filter head higher would interfere with the dip stick, but that could be fixed if necessary.

The FM1000 has options for a heater and WIF. The WIF could be hooked to a dash LED it one wanted. I'm going to stick with the stock heater and WIF. Overall, I'm very satisfied, thus far, with the set up. In retrospect, I may have just used GFS filter setup since it's all packaged together and ready to go if that had been availble at the time. The other idea I had would be to replace the stock unit altogether with the FM1000 and the longer filter. Use the optional heater and WIF (which could probably be wired to the stock sensor harness) and one would have good filtration at any hp/ pressure/ flow this engine could ever need. If anyone is interested in part #s let me know.

Hey Tinman, I completely missed this thread! Wow, I can't believe the FM-1000 can handle a filter that short! It's much shorter than the 6"-long FM-100 filters I run.

I take it the FM-100 filters are too small (diameter) to fit the FM-1000 head? Am I correct that the FM-1000 head runs 1/2" NPT ports (as opposed to the 3/8" NPT ports on the FM-100)?

Nice setup on your truck - mine is essentially identical.

You guessed right, the 100 filters are way too small. Yep, 1/2 inch fittings X4 and a bleeder screw. I actually think the longer (8") filter would fit, but it would be close. I think I'd have to move the filter up a little. There is a little room to go up, but the dip stick might get in the way. I'd like to try the longer Donaldson 2 mic. filter, but as I said, I had to get 3 filters at 50 bucks each, so I'm set for a while. That filter is about the same size and the stock filter and I'm sure it has more filter media. I figure since it is a secondary filter, I can go 30K or so between changes. That gives me about 100K worth filters. I could be talked into selling one of my short filters if anyone is interested. As stated in the other thread, there are a lot of options for this head such as a heater. I don't think I'm going to need that. I believe this filter (especially with the long filter) would give good filtration at any hp level and fuel pressure that a 5. 9 could handle.

I have since learned that the Donaldson filters are 2 micron nominal and 5 micron absolute. I emailed Stanadyne about a 2 micron filter and they said they only go as low as 5 microns. I think the Donaldson filter is made by stanadyne and their 2 micron is the same as Stanadyne's 5 micron. If I had known this, I'd have probably done something different. I was able to get the 8 inch filter to fit and I added a heater. Donaldson has changed their web page and I am having a hard time finding the part number but the Stanadyne 8 inch 5 micron is 33636 and the 4 inch 5 micron is 33119. (The Diesel Store has a lot of Stanadyne stuff.) When I get to the garage, I'll get the Donaldson filter number off the truck.

One thing to note: the filters are "Keyed" to the filter head for certain manufacturers and elements (30 micron filter keyed to 30 micron filter head). For instance, the John Deere filter for the FM100 head is for JD filters even though it's all Stanadyne. There are little buttons on the top of the filter that slide into the filter head "key". Easy to defeat by tapping the button down flat and you can use pretty much any brand FM filter with any FM head. I used John Deere filters in the FM100 in my wife's Liberty. It's neat to pop the hood and see John Deere anything on the Jeep.
