Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Engine/transmission Problems?

I am going to be buying all of the parts to fix my 5th from Standard Transmission in Texas-fully splined mainshaft, etc... how difficult is this for a shadetree mechanic? I have done all other mods to my truck so I can fumble some wrenches around, but I do not know if I want to take this on. How is the difficulty of this, and how long did it take some of you to do this fix? Thanks, Jason

what can I expect to pay for all of the tools necessary to do this as well?

It physically demanding from the r&r point of removing the transfer case and transmission. transmission jack? Do you have a friend to help you "man-handle" the heavy components?

Once you get it on the ground, do you have the factory service manual, specialty tools, air supply etc. to do the service proceedure.

Are you adept at assuring parts assy's stay indexed, in proper order etc.

I would say a 7 on a scale of 1-10 with 10 most difficult for the DIY? Are you prepared to remove it again if you install something backwards/incorrectly?

Ask them what a reman transmission costs if you keep your core, if you are concerned with keeping your transmission. . They are a reputable company!

Or have a reputable local installer install the parts if you are game to save yourself some money on the r&r.

Best of luck!

Jason,

A Factory service manual is a necessity. Read the disassembly and reassembly section and then decide if you can do it. A company called Quad 4x4 sells a video, tools, etc. to do the job. Go to their website and check it out.

As far as tools you will need a dial indicator with a magnetic base to set mainshaft endplay and a tool for the 5th gear nut would be good. You will also need a 0 to 1" micrometer or a good set of calipers to measure shim thickness. If you order your parts from Standard Transmission tell them you want a Shim kit to set mainshaft clearance, I doubt they will mention it. If all you do is replace the mainshaft, 5th gear & nut then you won't need the expensive bearing pullers. The rear tapered roller bearing on the mainshaft will slide off by hand. I recommend not using the old bearing because the race rotates alittle on the mainshaft. You will need a large set of snap ring pliers because there is a very strong snap ring on the mainshaft. You have a big pile of parts once you get everything off your original mainshaft, the order and direction they go is critical. (the service manual will point this out). A parts washer and air compressor to blow parts off would help out also. I modified a engine stand to hold the NV4500 , that way I could position it as needed.

Hope this info helps,

Kent :)
