Have read a lot on the need to overfill the Getrag by one quart. But I have upgraded to NV 4500 and am wondering, should I overfill this one by a qt. also ?

Wouldn't it be kind of hard to add an extra quart to this when you have to put it in through the fill hole that is situated sideways? Spills out when it gets full. (unless you tip the truck sideways ;) ) Mike

No - Overfilling a rotating piece of equipment will cause the following potential negatives:

1 - overfilling can lead to foaming and air entrainment - foaming oil and air entrained oil does not lubricate very well on bearings and gears - resulting in reduced lubrication and wear protection.

2 - overfilling can cause operating temperatures to increase - leading to reduced oil film thickness - reducing the wear protection of the bearings and gears.

3 - overfilling can create a situation called 'oil whirl' or 'oil whip' which results in the oil being wrapped around the rotating shafts actually causing 'vibration' due to the imbalance.

Not a good idea - proper oil fill for horizontal rotating equipment is to the center of the lowest bearing element located in the highest shaft if the shafts are not parallel. Overfilling to the center of the shafts jsut causes air entrainment and foaming.

R. C. ,

Given the numberof 4500s I've gone thru I asked the GM of Standard Transmission the same question a few days ago. His reply was a little extra (maybe 1/2 qt) might help some, but officially, no. I drove my truck onto two ramps on the right side to tilt the truck a little, then filled it to the bottom of the hole. I would say it was less than a pint of oil.

As a side note, they no longer use Syntorq. Amsoil (don't know which type) is now their oil of choice.

Did you decide to get yours rebuilt? I'm still of the opinion (since I have had three failures far from home) that you need to bite the bullet now. Shipping from Ft. Worth or Oklahoma City would be roughly $150, prolly less than an unknown reman shop in SLC.

transmission rebuild

Gary... . The transmission is on the way, expect it Mon. or Tues. Then we will open it up and see just what we are dealing with. Amazing to me it went 900 miles to get me back home and around town. From what I hear 165k is considered pretty good for a trans used commercial. Maybe the oil coolers helped some.

Are you still pulling RV's ? . . R C

It doesn't amaze me. I had a similar failure around Baker City, Or and pulled the 5er all the way to Eugene. Then unhooked and drove to Salem (mostly in 4th) for repair. I'm going back to work (if there is any) on about the 24th. Got some fishin' to do.
