I am curious about something with my truck. It had been hard to get into first or second from neutral when i was stopped at a light( i always kick it in neutral at lights to save the pilot bearing). The other week i had my son's 1st gen on the trailer, and as i was backing it up the driveway i slipped the clutch at the top of the hill(enough to make it stink). I stopped, put it in 4 low and finished backing with no more slipping. Now the stange thing is i don't have any shifting problems anymore. Any ideas?Randy

Before you slipped it backing up the trailer, it wasn't releasing all the way causing difficulty shifting from neutral. You wore the disk down a little and now it is disengaging completely.

Its unusual for this to occur, but my guess is your clutch was dragging for some reason and when you slipped it it either wore off the high spot, cleaned off the dirt, or something bad was about to happen and is now even closer. "hard to get in gear" is usually caused by a failure of the clutch disc to disengage, it is fairly common is sled pulling clutches when a floater gets warped or is cracked. In a stocker sometimes when the marcel in the disc is going bad it will also cause this but it never seems to get better if that is the case untill you replace it

sorry to restate the previous post, but I was finishing up while he posted. I agree with the above also

There are synchronizers on the gears that are supposed top stop the gears from turning when the truck is sitting still and synchronize the speed of the gears when the truck is moving so the gears will engage without grinding. Evidently the clutch or pilot bearing was dragging enough to keep the gears turning before the incident you describe and whatever you did either freed up the bearing or opened up the clutch enough so that the gears now stop like they should. bg---------------------------------------------------------- Oops, I just type slower than the two above. :) bg

so is the consensus that he needs a new clutch, my truck is acting the same way, however, it has been this way for 2 years now.
